00:14 razorsharph HaHa. That's great. It really snowed up in Boston!! We didn't get much snow down in NJ. Took my daughter out last week http://i.imgur.com/hbYIGoT.jpg
00:15 razorsharph Anyone ever Read through The Python for Data Analysis book? Pretty darn good. Went through some of fit today
00:23 pdurbin aw
00:26 pdurbin razorsharph: I'm pretty sure a friend at work has it on his bookshelf. He also did some analysis with Django and gave a talk about it: http://raprasad.github.io/indiana-meth-labs/present/python-web.html
00:29 razorsharph It's a great book to keep handy for sure. I'll be sure to check out your friends talk. I actually just went through the Django tutorial yesterday with a group of people from http://hangouts.codebuddies.org/. I've been trying to get more comfortable with frameworks since I am pretty new to all of fthis

01:45 pdurbin huh. codenewbies seems pretty cool!
01:45 pdurbin razorsharph: you might also like http://openhatch.org where I hang out with shauna and skay
01:46 pdurbin and I really like http://www.codenewbie.org too
01:51 shauna we also have an irc channel #openhatch
01:51 shauna probably easier to hang out with me and skay there :)

02:17 pdurbin great channel
02:45 razorsharph I'll check  http://openhatch.org out. I'm all about the communities and learning in groups. It makes things so much easier. I just started getting into Data Science so I'm a bit of a newb but I am very very interested in it.
03:02 pdurbin whoops I meant to say code*buddies* seems pretty cool
03:03 pdurbin razorsharph: you might like poking around our new-ish website: http://datascience.iq.harvard.edu
03:32 razorsharph I'll check it out. Do you work in the Data Science field?
03:39 pdurbin well, I'm in the Data Science group: http://www.iq.harvard.edu/people/people/data-science-products
03:40 pdurbin so I'm surrounded by data scientists but I have more of a traditional information technology background
03:42 pdurbin I'm hoping some of it rubs off on me. :)
03:45 razorsharph Yeah I hear ya there. It is quite the hot field. Very hard to break into. Hopefully some of what you learn can rub off on me as well. LOL
03:51 pdurbin well, my data science current goal is to find some data I'm interested in that I can upload to Dataverse that results in the "Explore" button showing up. Then I'll be able to play with the data in TwoRavens ( http://datascience.iq.harvard.edu/tworavens ) and ultimately run a model with Zelig ( http://zeligproject.org )
03:58 razorsharph Sounds cool. I've been thinking about a project to do myself. Trying to get comfortable with some of the tools. Maybe we can do some brainstorming and bounce things off eachother.  I'd love to get good enough to maybe try out a kaggle project
04:00 pdurbin yeah, a guy at IQSS blogged about Kaggle: http://blogs.iq.harvard.edu/sss/archives/2012/07/kaggle_is_going.shtml
04:04 pdurbin I haven't really spent time on Kaggle to figure out if I'm interested in any of the problems.

16:23 razorsharph Kaggle is really cool. I just don't have the skills yet needed to actually compete. But that is my goal at the moment

16:33 pdurbin razorsharph: am I reading this right that there are only 19 problems to work on? http://www.kaggle.com/competitions

18:22 razorsharph yup that's what I am seeing
18:25 pdurbin razorsharph: I feel like there are lots of opportunties under the mantle of "civic hacking"
18:27 pdurbin stuff like this: Towards a Citizen Internet: the Opportunity for Civic Software | UC Berkeley School of Information - http://www.ischool.berkeley.edu/newsandevents/events/deanslectures/20110309pahlka

19:16 razorsharph Yeah "civic hacking" seems to be a very hot topic this days. I have read a bunch of articles on the subject. Interesting stuff. There are some pretty big prizes being awarded for some of these contests
19:16 razorsharph All it takes is the right algorithm!!! LOL
19:18 pdurbin :)
19:47 pdurbin axfelix: ping! do you use dcterms:subject at all?
19:54 axfelix yup
19:54 pdurbin hmm
19:54 axfelix running around at a conference right now though :)
19:54 pdurbin axfelix: can you please look at or even comment on this when you get a chance: https://github.com/IQSS/dataverse/issues/1430#issuecomment-73577719
19:55 axfelix sure thing
19:55 pdurbin sounds like we might like to start enforcing a controlled vocabulary
