pdurbin: it's more of a skeleton to fill in at this point - but it's a starting point at least

slightly off-topic question - for generating data citations in bibtex, is there an entry type for data or do people usually use misc? or something else?
16:30
pameyer
or feel free to let me know if this is too off-topic

pameyer: uh. it's on topic but I have no idea. I'd suggest asking at https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/dataverse-community

sivoais: do you use bibtex?

sivoais
pdurbin: yep! usually through biblatex
18:22
sivoais
let me check... I believe I have a dataset entry in my thesis
18:23
pdurbin
sivoais: cool. saw the question by pameyer?
18:23
sivoais
yeah, it looks like I used @misc
18:24
sivoais
I grabbed the bibtex entry from <http://zenodo.org/record/14809 >
18:25
sivoais
hmm, I've never heard of DataCite before
18:25
sivoais
<https://www.datacite.org/services/cite-your-data.html >
18:30
pdurbin
we talk a lot about datacite: https://github.com/IQSS/dataverse/issues?utf8=%E2%9C%93&q=is%3Aissue+datacite
18:32
pdurbin
and we use DataCite standards in our metedata: http://guides.dataverse.org/en/4.2.2/user/appendix.html
18:38
sivoais
I suppose that those citation standards work with the UNF?
18:38
sivoais
err, metadata standards
18:42
pdurbin
hmm. dunno
18:42
pdurbin
UNF is more like an checksum like MD5 but for data
18:46
sivoais
I suppose it is better to tag explicit versions because they are more human readable.
18:47
sivoais
UNF would only be for internal use, right?
18:47
* sivoais
wonders if anyone put up the Enron e-mail corpus in Dataverse
18:47
pdurbin
no. you can publish your UNF
18:47
pdurbin
reference it
18:48
pdurbin
it's part of the citation, I think
18:49
pdurbin
yeah, the UNF is in the citation. Here, for example: https://dataverse.harvard.edu/dataset.xhtml?persistentId=doi:10.7910/DVN/MD2UM1
18:53
sivoais
hmm, no bibtex? Also, the DOI endpoint doesn't support using the HTTP header "Accept: text/bibliography; style=bibtex"
18:54
sivoais
ah, so here is the issue for bibtex <https://github.com/IQSS/dataverse/issues/1013 >
18:54
pdurbin
yeah. open issue
18:59
sivoais
ok, i tried to get the RIS data for a couple DOIs
18:59
sivoais
but it doesn't seem to work on one
18:59
sivoais
curl -LH "Accept: application/x-research-info-systems" 'http://dx.doi.org/10.7910/DVN/29381' 'http://dx.doi.org/10.7910/DVN/MD2UM1'
19:01
pameyer
it looks like 1013 mentions using "@data" - that's what I was wondering about. not sure if bibtex style support would be an issue with that (in some cases it looks like it's an issue with "@misc")
19:02
pameyer
sivoais: thanks for the example; I hadn't noticed that zenodo had bibtex exports
19:02
sivoais
no problem :-)
19:03
sivoais
yeah, it used to be the case that the @online entry type wasn't widely supported either and you'd have to customise the .bst file
19:03
sivoais
that might be the case with @data
19:17
pdurbin
I'm losing the thread of what you two are talking about. Please open GitHub issues if necessary. :)
19:20
sivoais
pdurbin: does that curl command make sense? I'll open an issue if that behaviour is not already known
19:22
pdurbin
sivoais: you're curl'ing a doi.org URL not a Dataverse URL
19:22
pameyer
pdurbin: for my part, nothing that's dv specific enough for an issue
19:23
pameyer
curl can follow redirects with the appropriate arguments - don't remember which off the top of my head
19:23
pdurbin
-L
19:24
pdurbin
sivoais: please open an issue. I'll flag it as a duplicate if necessary.
19:51

sivoais: thanks for Using Accept header with DOI does not seem to return data consistently · Issue #2856 · IQSS/dataverse - https://github.com/IQSS/dataverse/issues/2856
19:53
sivoais
:-)
19:58
sivoais
ah, is that last one from today?
19:58
sivoais
the URI you linked was uploaded today
19:59
pdurbin
yeah, today
19:59
sivoais
do DOIs need time to be registered with DataCite?
19:59
pdurbin
hmm. dunno

sivoais: if you're talking about registering DOIs with DataCite metadata, then I haven't seen significant lag time between registering and when they're visible.
21:09
pameyer
if you're talking about registering through a datacite API ; I'm not sure
