00:11 pameyer pdurbin: I'd been thinking suggestions; wouldn't have though of doing postmortem feedback for rewriting while it's being rewritten
00:11 pameyer sorry I missed the jq sub issue
00:28 pdurbin pameyer: I didn't put the titles of the subissues in. you would have gotten extra credit for noticing :)

10:58 pdurbin bencomp: thanks. I need the encouragement. It's a bit of a slog. I left some more comments on the google doc you started.

14:41 pdurbin bencomp: what did you have in mind with "architecture of the application"?
14:42 pdurbin dcoloma: hi! welcome
15:10 michbars1 joined #dataverse
15:16 bencomp pdurbin: something like the diagram that you put in the new doc (the application and its environment), but also, or perhaps even primarily, some description of components in the application
15:18 bencomp e.g. JSF and API components, business logic beans, JPA component, PID handling, to name a few
15:18 pdurbin bencomp: by components do you mean "Solr" or do you mean "search index"? I assume you mean subsystems like "search index" or "ingest service". Some of these may not have the best names.
15:20 bencomp I'm thinking of 'subsystems that provide certain functionality to/within the application'
15:20 pdurbin bencomp: I don't think I want to mention beans. That dev guide territory. Same with JPA and JSF. Sysadmins shouldn't need to worry about this stuff.
15:21 pdurbin I wonder what "Data/Service Component" means: https://github.com/IQSS/dataverse/issues/2330#issuecomment-164778828
15:23 bencomp hmm, I need to think about it some more - I'm working on something else now
15:24 pdurbin sure. I don't want to get hung up on it anyway
15:25 pdurbin maybe I should think about it in terms of which processes are running
15:25 bencomp there are always other ways to look at things :)
15:25 pdurbin yeah
15:26 bencomp Q to keep you busy while I do other things: who needs to understand your architecture?
15:27 pdurbin buh, dunno. it was your idea, bencomp :)
15:27 pdurbin sysadmins need to be aware of the moving parts
15:27 pdurbin restart this service, etc
15:30 shauna pdurbin: thanks for the link, although it's a bit depressing
15:30 pdurbin shauna: yeah. a little tone deaf
15:31 shauna sounds a bit like dan gilbert's "second rate researchers" although at least they didn't call open scientists jihadists?
15:32 shauna I do understand their perspective - within the scientific institutions that we have currently, sharing data and methods openly and pushing to check them can be threatening.
15:32 shauna I just wish they'd turn their fear and frustration on the institutions, not on the reformers.
15:33 pdurbin I'd call the enemy "bad science".
15:35 shauna Sure, but that's a pretty vague enemy.  There are specific practices that powerful institutions perpetuate that create bad science.
15:35 shauna The powerful institutions aren't themselves an enemy, of course.
15:51 dcoloma pdurbin: hi!, thanks!
15:53 pdurbin dcoloma: if you're installing Dataverse I've been asking folks on feedback on some docs I'm writing
15:53 pdurbin http://dvn-vm1.hmdc.harvard.edu/tmp/issues/2884/build/html/installation/prep.html
16:00 dcoloma pdurbin: good to know, I've just installed an instance following the previous guidelines
16:00 pdurbin oh good

18:20 dcoloma pdurbin: ok, what's your preferred way for getting feedback? GH issues?
18:20 pdurbin dcoloma: whatever works for you. I'm here now if you want to mention anything top of mind.
18:27 dcoloma pdurbin: it's getting a bit late here. I took some notes, so let me make them a bit meaningful before I share them with you
18:28 pdurbin dcoloma: sure! No rush. You can pastebin them or whatever. Or post it on https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/dataverse-community

20:46 pdurbin can't. let. perfect. be. enemy. of. good.
20:46 pdurbin bencomp pameyer I think I'm gonna push what I got. get feedback. jenkins builds

20:48 bencomp pdurbin: perfect is the enemy of "good enough" :)
20:49 pdurbin what I have isn't good enough but it's better
20:49 pdurbin (I think)
20:49 bencomp it can hardly be worse after giving it more thought :)
20:50 pdurbin I can't believe vim considers "sysadmins" to be a typo.
20:50 bencomp lol
21:04 bencomp just finished watching a CNI presentation about the OSF and University of Notre Dame's use and extensions. I'm impressed - knew osf.io already, but the integrations are cool
21:04 pdurbin bencomp: you know about https://osf.io/getting-started/#dataverse right?
21:04 bencomp of course
21:05 pdurbin :)
21:05 bencomp just heard a mention of http://www.switchproject.eu/
21:05 bencomp and especially the Umbrella project was cool, although I can't seem to find the right URL
21:06 pdurbin some cloud thing :)
21:06 pdurbin Software Workbench for Interactive, Time Critical and Highly self-adaptive Cloud applications!

21:09 bencomp I expected at least a mention at http://ccl.cse.nd.edu/software/
21:09 bencomp have you heard of Parrot, pdurbin? "Parrot is a transparent user-level virtual filesystem that allows any ordinary program to be attached to many different remote storage systems, including HDFS, iRODS, Chirp, and FTP. "
21:11 pdurbin I thought Parrot was the Perl 6 VM.
21:12 bencomp it used to be a Bluetooth hands free set for use in cars :P
21:12 bencomp or maybe still is
21:16 pdurbin dunno
21:23 sivoais pdurbin: Parrot is the old Perl 6 VM. The new one is MoarVM (and the JVM).
21:24 sivoais bencomp: I saw that Parrot FS as I was working on understanding the state of scientific software archival/reproducibility
21:24 sivoais It's very cool research

21:26 bencomp sivoais: yes!
21:26 sivoais I'll watch it when I get home :-D
21:30 pdurbin sivoais: ah. ok. thanks
21:32 garnett joined #dataverse
21:33 sivoais Parrot VM still exists, it just isn't a major target of Rakudo (the main Perl 6 compiler)
21:33 bencomp well, for software that should aid preservation, it's not well preserved - dead links from a blog post published last October :S
21:34 bencomp I found it anyway: https://github.com/crcresearch/daspos-umbrella
21:35 bencomp http://cclnd.blogspot.nl/2015/10/haiyan-worked-together-with-alexander.html is the blog post
21:35 pdurbin sivoais: I'm not even sure if Perl 6 shipped at Christmas like it was supposed to but let's pick this up in #sourcefu. :)
21:36 sivoais hehe, sure thing
21:36 * sivoais checks out the links
21:43 * pdurbin tries to get sivoais's attention: http://irclog.greptilian.com/sourcefu/2016-01-22 :)
21:43 * pdurbin tries to get people excited about docs: https://groups.google.com/d/msg/dataverse-community/qujUFJDYXG0/aLGEnydbAgAJ
