13:55 pdurbin pameyer: mornin'. I started a doc for this afternoon's sprint planning: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1pRH50NmfQTFm6XNfChjTcn1oPkM1iL6dfZqNwG8BXio/edit?usp=sharing

14:48 pameyer pdurbin: morning - I'm probably going to miss this one
15:01 pdurbin pameyer: ok. No worries.
15:04 pameyer you and bmckinney can probably find things to talk about without me

19:36 iamtimmo hi, folks. any documentation on metadata block definition anywhere? I’ve found multiple example definition spreadsheets, but no documentation.
19:37 pdurbin iamtimmo: there's http://guides.dataverse.org/en/4.3/user/appendix.html but are you looking for more than that?
19:39 iamtimmo pdurbin: Thanks. I’ve seen these. And the .tsv versions are the kinds of examples I’m talking about. What I’m looking for is documentation for how to create your own metadata blocks. So, the syntax and semantics of the .tsv files.
19:58 iamtimmo pdurbin: Should I take your silence as a “no”? ;-)
19:59 pdurbin pameyer: are you able to explain to iamtimmo how to create a new metadata block tsv file? :) You guys are working on one at https://github.com/bmckinney/bio-dataverse/blob/b862f3bb40fa25d0735dcaffc41b54ba7ce3c149/scripts/api/data/metadatablocks/customSBGrid.tsv
19:59 iamtimmo oh, I spoke too soon.
19:59 pameyer pdurbin, iamtimmo: I probably can't - but bmckinney might be able to
20:01 pdurbin iamtimmo: you might be interested in https://github.com/IQSS/dataverse/issues/2357
20:01 iamtimmo pameyer: I’d much appreciate an direction I can get. I have created a couple of these, but did it stabbing in the dark.
20:01 pdurbin and I'm sorry but I gotta go
20:01 iamtimmo so long, pdurbin
20:02 iamtimmo pdurbin: and I am interested in this. it’s one of my issues, too.
20:06 pdurbin iamtimmo: bencomp is right that we misuse tsv a bit: http://irclog.iq.harvard.edu/dataverse/2016-03-29#i_33345 :)
20:06 pameyer iamtimmo: my input was more along the lines of what rather than how - but if you've got questions, I can take a shot
20:06 pameyer let me scroll up a bit to see  what I missed
20:08 pdurbin iamtimmo: generally, we'd like people to email support@dataverse.org if they'd like to create their own metadata block, I think. It requires some hand holding.

20:09 pameyer non-expert take on the semantics: the name column is the internal name; dataverseAlias corresponds to what's displayed in the UI, and displayName corresponds to a tooltip
20:10 pameyer factable ~= searchable
20:11 iamtimmo pdurbin: okay. but it seems kinda straightforward. Y’all’ve produced a bunch of these blocks now, so it’s just a matter of documenting what the columns mean exactly, the implications of certain choices, etc.
20:13 iamtimmo I’ve created one of these already as part of migration work. I’m creating another one now with a colleague who is interested in exploring metadata for software. We plan on playing around with this a fair bit and tring to do this through dataverse support introduces a lot of latency.
20:14 pdurbin yeah
20:21 pdurbin ok really going. in the rain!
20:22 iamtimmo see ya, pdurbin
20:22 pameyer hope you can stay dry
20:22 pameyer iamtimmo: do you have a favorite tool or workflow for experimenting with metadata?
20:24 iamtimmo pameyer: I use oXygenXML when I’m working with XML, if that’s what you mean. But for this work, we’re interested in how we can configure DV 4.x to accept and display the kind of information we want to gather and share.
20:28 pameyer my question wasn't very DV specific (and somewhat tangential to your questions about tsv files).  From the perspective of a metadata-newbie, trying to put together a metadata schema in free text seemed somewhat sub-optimal.  XML also seems to introduce some overhead; but it also seems to be the only markup language that lets you do attributes on relation types (at least, I don't know of others).
20:28 pameyer for DV 4.x, are you thinking XML -> TSV?
20:30 iamtimmo I see. No, don’t need to do that. I just need to know how the tsv maps to DV 4 functionality. We won’t transform our metadata to TSV. Only need TSV to define metadata blocks.
20:31 pameyer ok - I was confused.  I was thinking you had the schema definition in XML
