16:14 donsizemore @pameyer suppose a little bird were taking a crack at porting the installer to python. would you see a need to retain backwards compatibility with the existing default.config format?
16:14 pameyer @donsizemore: I absolutely wouldn't
16:15 donsizemore @pameyer python's config parser would make the config file much more user-friendly
16:15 pameyer I'm pretty sure *anything* would make that config file more user-friendly
16:17 pameyer it might not even make sense to keep a config file around - it would be more consistent to have all the parameters in either a file, command line arguments, or environmental variables (instead of a mix)

17:47 donsizemore @pameyer i was leaning towards a python-friendly config file with no user prompting during installation
17:48 donsizemore @pameyer and it would make more sense to me if the installer didn't actually create the database, but instead if dataverse offered a short SQL snippet to do that for the unfamiliar
17:50 pameyer python-friendly config file sounds good to me.  I considered going with yaml for default.config; but decided that it was more complexity than it was worth at the time (partly due to my perl-fu being weak).
17:50 pameyer I know that @pdurbin (who's offline this week at least) is partial to command line arguments for his phenix/jenkins configuration; so I'm not sure what his take on it would be.
17:51 pameyer I need to think some on your idea about not creating the database
17:52 pameyer having the provisioning system create it wouldn't be a problem for me; but I'm not sure where else it might be a problem.
17:52 donsizemore @pameyer it's really the database admin password / pg_hba.conf/trust bit that i don't like
17:53 pameyer good point - it is giving an installer admin db access to what may be a shared database server
17:53 donsizemore 'xactly
17:55 pameyer I'm wondering if something along the lines of "create database if it doesn't exist" / "isn't supplied" is possible / more complexity than it's worth
