Was this ever tried to be removed? The only Xerces dep I could find in pom.xml was about excluding it from dep management for SWORD stuff

As time has passed by, this may just work now and the option could be stripped out. And of course a test case would be great... ;-) As noted: I couldn't fully understand what the issue was...

Next question... More complicated. Summary first: is there some kind of hard requirement to use PERSISTANT EJB timers? Wouldn't non-persistant be sufficient?

I am asking because currently you need a database setup in Glassfish (plus more options in Payara) for those.

I don't know. Leonid is our EJB timer guru. I tend to document the setup of cron jobs hitting API endpoints periodically because I understand cron well enough.
