10:26 pdurbin Good morning. Did I miss anything yesterday? :)
10:27 poikilotherm According to the logs: nope :-D
10:29 pdurbin phew :)
10:29 poikilotherm The community officer was not online, so the community was busy with other things ;-)
10:31 poikilotherm Let me share some news with you pdurbin. We had our onboarding meeting with Dataverse the other day. It went pretty smooth. One of my last questions was: may we (FZJ) provide an account for integration testing to Dataverse, using the Fabrica Test env (which does not cost money)
10:31 poikilotherm Britta responded "yeah, go ahead"
10:32 poikilotherm Oh this reminds me to write a note about the mail Gustavo send yesterday
10:32 poikilotherm -d +t
10:35 poikilotherm What do you think about integration tests for the DOI provider
10:38 pdurbin I don't think we currently have any real integration tests for DOI (or Handle) providers, unfortunately.
10:38 poikilotherm Yeah.
10:39 poikilotherm And if I understood correctly, this is mostly due to having no account
10:39 poikilotherm This account is obviously not shareable to everyone out there for demo/test installations
10:39 poikilotherm But at least its useable for integration testing
10:40 pdurbin When were were on EZID we had a shared account.
10:40 pdurbin DataCite has a different policy.
10:40 poikilotherm Yeah, I remember
10:40 poikilotherm Aye
10:42 pdurbin If you want to work on this area, please go for it. I keep checking your board to see what's in focus. :)
10:42 pdurbin Did you notice that Jonas made a board for WZB? https://github.com/orgs/IQSS/projects/11
10:43 poikilotherm Nope, did not see that
10:43 poikilotherm I wanted to make sure we have the option to create tests for this
10:44 poikilotherm And share that with you guys
10:44 pdurbin Absolutely.
10:44 poikilotherm This reminds me of the DOI issue to add to my board
10:44 pdurbin So given the policy, the tests would only run if they've been configured with a username and password, right? Otherwise, they'd be skipped? :)
10:47 poikilotherm Yeah
10:47 poikilotherm I would be happy to add them to jenkins.dataverse.org
10:51 pdurbin poikilotherm: cool. My approach is the spin up my own jenkins using INSTALL.md in https://github.com/IQSS/dataverse-jenkins and the export my job and make a pull request to that repo.
11:07 poikilotherm pdurbin did you see https://github.com/IQSS/dataverse/issues/6053 and that I moved it on the board?
11:08 poikilotherm I hope that was alright and aligned with your intentions from last time we chattered about the issue boards
11:55 pdurbin poikilotherm: yep, I left you a comment
12:14 poikilotherm Re-commented https://github.com/IQSS/dataverse/issues/6053#issuecomment-515019590
12:25 pdurbin I have all sorts of questions but I need to drive my daughter and her friend to camp.
12:27 poikilotherm I'll be around for about 2.5h ;-)
12:27 pdurbin Can I see an example of a project that uses this thing heavily?
12:27 pdurbin Is it possible to opt out?
12:28 poikilotherm You need to opt in
12:28 pdurbin How does auth work? Can this bot trample all over my fork?
12:28 pdurbin Will my fork be littered with pull requests from this bot?
12:28 donsizemore joined #dataverse
12:28 pdurbin What does donsizemore think about it?
12:28 poikilotherm I don't have an example, but the app page seems to list a few
12:28 pdurbin And all the other regular contributors.
12:29 poikilotherm Auth via Github apps. You can narrow it down to one specific repo
12:29 poikilotherm Yes, you will have PRs in your fork, but they are auto-merged. You will have notifications, that is a limitation from Github.
12:30 poikilotherm In theory it could trample over your fork, but it will only work on the configured branche
12:30 * donsizemore thinks @poikilotherm knows better than @donsizemore
12:30 poikilotherm And as mentioned: it is totally opt on
12:30 poikilotherm -o+i
12:30 poikilotherm You need to actively enable the app on Github
12:31 poikilotherm Upstream is just easing configuration
12:41 poikilotherm I hate blockers :-( https://github.com/GoogleContainerTools/skaffold/issues/2547
12:53 poikilotherm By the pdurbin: did you take a look at https://datacite.org/roadmap.html recently
12:53 poikilotherm It has been updated, they use https://www.productboard.com/features/ now
12:53 poikilotherm We talked about the future of the roadmap here and there, that's why I asked them what software they use for it
13:06 pdurbin Interesting. I'd love help with https://dataverse.org/software-features (via the spreadsheet linked at the bottom), which is related. This is also new: https://www.iq.harvard.edu/roadmap-dataverse-project
13:08 pdurbin donsizemore: I'm going to bike in to work soon but where are we with whatever we'd talked about doing? Do you need me to test any branches?
13:14 pdurbin I just merged the -a branch. Thanks again.
13:14 pdurbin donsizemore: can we talk about Munin some more? I started hacking on the jstat scripts a bit.
13:16 pdurbin And I wanted to let you know that I found https://github.com/munin-monitoring/contrib/blob/master/plugins/glassfish/glassfish_counters_
13:16 pdurbin and https://github.com/munin-monitoring/contrib/blob/master/plugins/solr/solr
13:17 pdurbin (but we should focus on glassfish first, then solr)

13:50 donsizemore @pdurbin at the risk of forking, do we want a munin-plugins-for-dataverse repo?
14:07 dataverse-user joined #dataverse
14:10 dataverse-user Hi! We are now working on the configuration of DOIs in the Dataverse repository and we have this question: Is it possible to configure the credentials of Crossref as a provider? Or in Dataverse we can only use Datacite as a provider?
14:12 poikilotherm Hi dataverse-user :-)
14:12 poikilotherm To use Crossref, you would need to provide another provider implementation
14:13 poikilotherm But I also doubt that CrossRef wants to register DOIs for research data
14:17 dataverse-user Thank you you're right, we have not ask them if they'll do it. In case they say they can register DOIs for research data, is it technically possible? Do you know if there is any place in which we can find a guide for the implementation?
14:18 poikilotherm We had an onboarding webinar with DataCite on Tuesday
14:19 poikilotherm From what I took home from the webinar slides, CrossRef is focusing on text publications
14:19 poikilotherm DataCite is all about Software and Data
14:19 poikilotherm This is also reflected in the metadata schemas
14:19 poikilotherm Other players to mention are ORCID and ROR
14:20 poikilotherm In the current implementation, you can use Handles and DataCite.
14:20 poikilotherm It would obviously technically possible to implement a new provider for CrossRef
14:20 poikilotherm YOu will "just" have to use their API
14:21 poikilotherm There are the developer, admin and user guides, discussions on Github and here plus many more options to get connected
14:21 poikilotherm There is no specific guide for pid providers
14:21 poikilotherm Err.. the implementation of new providers
14:22 poikilotherm In case you haven't found the guides yet, here is the dev guide:
14:22 poikilotherm http://guides.dataverse.org/en/latest/developers/index.html
14:23 poikilotherm From my experience with the nice devs at IQSS they would appreciate if you open an issue on Github, describing your proposal and what you could do/provide/add to realize it.
14:23 poikilotherm pdurbin and other are very responsive here and on GH
14:23 poikilotherm +s
14:24 poikilotherm Right now he is on his way to work, he should be with us in a few minutes again :-)
14:27 poikilotherm This is a version of the graph we saw back then: https://image.slidesharecdn.com/brittadreyer-datacite-180703144824/95/how-datacite-and-crossref-support-research-data-sharing-crossref-live-hannover-3-638.jpg?cb=1530629449
14:27 pdurbin dataverse-user: Crossref mints DOIs? I didn't know that. Dataverse only supports DataCite and EZID ad DOI providers.
14:27 poikilotherm This is from 2018
14:27 poikilotherm These days, institutions are covered by ROR
14:28 poikilotherm pdurbin: CrossRef is THE institution to provide DOIs for text publications :-)
14:28 poikilotherm Obviously they are part of handle as is DataCite ;-)
14:28 pdurbin oh, interesting
14:29 poikilotherm I dunno if I can share the recent slide with you guys - no license attached :-/
14:29 dataverse-user Thank you!! All this information is very useful for us. We'll explore the developer guide but I think we are going to consider the option of having Datacite as our provider for data DOIs
14:30 pdurbin "We don’t supply DOIs ad-hoc. If the publisher of your paper is a member, they’ll register your article on your behalf." https://www.crossref.org/faqs/#q2general
14:30 poikilotherm You can reach out to DataCite on Twitter or write them an email ;-)
14:30 poikilotherm And obviously Britta Dreyer is a good contact person
14:31 pdurbin dataverse-user: the Dataverse team is friendly with Martin Fenner from DataCite. If we have contacts at Crossref I'm not aware of them. Dataverse's new Make Data Count feature pulls citation to data from Crossref via DataCite.
14:31 poikilotherm Prices for membership is very affordable... ;-) And depending on where you are coming from: in some places there are big libraries providing the service for free.
14:32 poikilotherm It all depends on your use case and expected amount of DOIs
14:32 pdurbin dataverse-user: also, you can get a discount on DataCite DOIs by joining the new Datavese consortium: http://dataversecommunity.global/members
14:32 poikilotherm Ah thx pdurbin I almost forgot about that!
14:32 yoh joined #dataverse
14:32 pdurbin poikilotherm: I was wondering a bit if you institution planned to join :)
14:33 poikilotherm Maybe once we are in production...
14:33 poikilotherm Do you know if GDCC got the payment and administration things sorted out?
14:33 poikilotherm IIRC they had some troubles how to go ahead, hadn't they?
14:34 pdurbin I think any troubles are over.
14:34 poikilotherm Great!
14:34 pdurbin Oh, by the way, there's a "Plugin mechanism to support further PID providers" issue: https://github.com/IQSS/dataverse/issues/4106
14:35 poikilotherm Glad they sorted it out, because that unblocks to road to have us as a member :-D
14:35 poikilotherm pdurbin: I think this is more or less a dead end...
14:35 dataverse-user Yes thank you! we were reading about the Consortium and the benefits for the members. Do you know if the process of becoming a member is long?
14:36 pdurbin I think all you have to do is email donsizemore's boss, Jon Crabtree, to begin the process of joining the Dataverse consortium.
14:36 pdurbin dataverse-user: I think it's pretty easy. You should email Jon.
14:37 pdurbin dataverse-user: if you tell us your name or institution donsizemore can probably give Jon a heads up to look for your email.
14:39 dataverse-user Perfect, I think our institution can be interested also because of the benefit on Datacite, but I'll have to discuss it with my boss
14:39 dataverse-user My institution is Universidad del Rosario from Colombia, my email is marial.lizarazo@urosario.edu.co
14:48 dataverse-user Thank you for the information. I'll discuss all this with our team and email Datacite and the Consortium. Also if we decide to go ahead with the implementation with other PID provider we may open an issue on Github. thanks
14:48 dataverse-user left #dataverse
14:48 pdurbin cool
14:50 dataverse-user joined #dataverse
14:53 pdurbin donsizemore: so anyway, Munin. What do you think? :)
14:54 pdurbin Ah, and I'm glad to see that http://research-data.urosario.edu.co is already on https://dataverse.org/metrics
14:55 pdurbin And the map at https://dataverse.org
15:02 pdurbin donsizemore: I went ahead and emailed Jon to give him a heads up. And I forwarded it to you.
15:20 donsizemore @pdurbin hey hey - sorry, IRC window went to the background. belated welcome to Maria!
15:20 donsizemore @pdurbin on Munin: what I'm hearing is that you want your own fork of those plugins
17:06 pdurbin donsizemore: well, I do like Munin. I have no plans to take it off my home server. But should we invest time in writing Munin plugins for Dataverse (in a fork of plugins is fine) or should we be looking at newer tools including whatever tools https://github.com/eclipse/microprofile-metrics supports? (Something like Prometheus.)
