17:56 bricas_ I see parts of the documentation explaining how to make some files private, are there similar options at the dataset level?
18:06 pdurbin bricas_: at the file level, we usually say "restricted". No, you can't restrict datasets. All you can do is leave them unpublished.
18:08 bricas_ Okay. that's what i thought. I will relay that info, thanks!
18:09 pdurbin bricas_: sure. What's the use case?
18:13 bricas_ I'm not exactly sure, honestly. Our staff are meeting with some researchers about using our DV and they were wondering about restricted access to datasets.
18:19 pdurbin Gotcha. In general the idea is that metadata is made discoverable but files can be restricted.
18:20 pdurbin And researchers sometimes call files datasets. :)
18:35 bricas_ yeah, the terms can get interchanged a bit, i imagine.
18:35 bricas_ is that a hard-line policy or has there ever been talk about restricted datasets?
18:48 pdurbin bricas_: what would a restricted dataset look like? How would it be different than an unpublished dataset?
18:52 bricas_ answering a question with a question should be outlawed. ;)
18:52 bricas_ i'm not sure, really. i better let this one die unless the staff relay more questions my way....
19:02 pdurbin bricas_: heh, sorry. We do sometimes talk about restricting some metadata. The example is often endangered animals or something. But right now all metadata is public and indexed by search engines when you publish. Again, files (which some researchers call datasets) can be restricted. :)
19:19 bricas_ noted. if i get more details i'll be sure to follow up. thanks again.
19:23 pdurbin sure, thanks :)
