hello there
13:02
Virgile
newbie question: To use several payara servers you "just" need to configure a payara cluster?

@Virgile there's a little in the docs here https://guides.dataverse.org/en/latest/installation/advanced.html#multiple-app-servers

thnx don :)

@pameyer just patched a box running Akio's fork of 4.20. 1st homepage load: 8.044s - 2nd: 1.342s

@pameyer ancillary box running 4.16: 9s/1.6s

Virgile: I think we played around with clustering using Glassfish years and years ago but have gotten away from it. Our idea these days, I think, is it have the app server be stateless (to the extent possible).

Virgile
That's what i guessed when i read the link don gave me ^^ load balancing with reverse apache proxies and then sync what has to be synced
15:18
pdurbin
Right, back in the day when we had multiple servers with the same NFS volume mounted I don't believe we had to do as much syncing. But now they're separate AWS EC2 instances.
15:35
pdurbin
When we've worked with Red Hat in the past they seemed especially interested in the app server being stateless. And they really want all the services to be able to be scaled independently.

@donsizemore - ouch, that's a big gap
15:45
pameyer
and 8s seems on the slower side
15:46
pameyer
@pdurbin - I'd though you could do shared EBS (or some other way of shared storage mounts in AWS short of NFS)
15:47
pdurbin
It's quite possible. rsync might be cheaper. :)
15:47
pameyer
I'm not going to disparage rsync :)
15:48
pameyer
but then you've got intervals between syncs
15:49
pdurbin
Yeah, I don't know the details about how we manage it. Maybe we should just write a base64 version of the logos to the database or something.
15:50
pameyer
would make the app servers more easily scalable; but it would bump up the db traffic a bit
15:51
pdurbin
Yeah. There's also been talk years ago of putting logos and such on a CDN.
15:53
pameyer
moving non-restrictable user uploads (logos, etc) and static files outside the app server would probably help even without a CDN
15:53
pameyer
would take some doing though
16:03
pdurbin
yeah

once the logos are in the web browser's cache, it should not do so much access to the db, right?
17:00
pdurbin
That's true, but these are just ideas... not how Dataverse works right now.
17:04
pameyer
I'm not sure - session id cookies and logos that are base64 encoded into the generated html may not get cached in a useful manner
17:05
pameyer
although a quick check suggets I'm wrong about browser cache and session id cookies; base64 encoded logos are probably a different story

It probably makes sense to start winding down since Harvard is going to be closed for two weeks for the holidays. We'll be back on Monday, January 4th.

Oh good, Danny just posted about this: https://groups.google.com/g/dataverse-community/c/d_1T5ncE2l0/m/olxmZ89dBQAJ

good idea

hopefully anybody that pops in here will see it in the logs
20:21

yeah
20:21

looks like google groups got rid of their "switch back to old ui" option :(

pdurbin: are you dug out from the snow yet?
20:23
pdurbin
Heh. I'm just glad they're actively maintaining it.
20:23
pameyer
good point

You know, since we moved we have a small garage. So it's a matter of pushing stuff back until our car fits in. And this condo association pays for snow removal. So I'm sitting pretty.
20:24
pdurbin
After so many years of shoveling I feel lazy. How's your snow experience?
20:25
pameyer
with no car to worry about, and remote work, pretty good
20:26
pameyer
back when I had a car, I really appreciated the difference having indoor or covered parking made
20:29
pdurbin
Speaking of remote... believe it or not but Brookline had all the students go remote yesterday. And today they called a snow day.
20:35
pameyer
good to hear - I was wondering if snow days were something that kids were going to lose with the technology changes
20:36
pdurbin
It was looking that way until we got the robocall last night. It was nice to let the kids sleep in.
20:38

:) I'm looking forward to sleeping in over Harvard's winter recess

Me too. Whelp, I'm taking off. Happy New Year, everyone! See you on Jan 4th.
