14:29 sbmarks morning!

15:15 MaTt1337357 morning
15:42 pdurbin just got back from sledding in the rain. exhausted
17:56 sbmarks sounds like it's nasty there too
17:57 sbmarks i had to trudge in through an inch of road flavored slurpee this morning
18:00 pdurbin heh. freezing rain and very windy. at least the kids got some exercise. so many snow days this year
18:05 sbmarks heh.
18:06 sbmarks So, I've got a question for you. I assume there's no way to view logs on the IQSS DVN, yeah?
18:06 sbmarks I've had a user failing to upload an SPSS file to our DVN, and so I turned around and tested it on your prod. =)
18:07 sbmarks it also fails, but I wanted to see if the error is the same or more informative, because it fails differently
18:08 MaTt1337357 how big is the data file
18:08 MaTt1337357 I can test it on my local dev build
18:08 sbmarks 2.7MB
18:08 sbmarks so not big
18:08 MaTt1337357 ok, well if you want to send it to me
18:09 MaTt1337357 I can look at it quickly
18:09 sbmarks surely. thanks! I am not trying to buck the system though so let me know if i am being a pain in the ass
18:09 MaTt1337357 ha
18:12 MaTt1337357 I get an "IndexOutOfBounds" exception
18:12 MaTt1337357 what do you get
18:12 MaTt1337357 @sbmarks ^^
18:12 MaTt1337357 er not a happy expression
18:13 MaTt1337357 me pointing above what i just typed
18:13 sbmarks haha
18:13 sbmarks yeah, same
18:13 sbmarks though the user claims the file opens and works in SPSS just fine
18:13 MaTt1337357 do you mind if i attach your data set to a ticket?
18:13 sbmarks I will have to verify
18:13 sbmarks errrr. can I check with the user on that?
18:14 pdurbin could always start with an RT ticket. it's private...
18:14 MaTt1337357 sure
18:14 sbmarks ok sure.
18:14 MaTt1337357 yea
18:14 MaTt1337357 eh
18:14 MaTt1337357 I don't think we should attach the data to a ticket
18:14 MaTt1337357 even if it is discrete
18:14 MaTt1337357 discreet...
18:14 sbmarks i think this is the user's real data so I want to be mindful of access =)
18:14 MaTt1337357 @sbmarks exactly
18:15 sbmarks anyway, thanks for the sanity checking
18:15 MaTt1337357 I actually have the spss file reader open right now
18:15 sbmarks I'll be back with more info after I verify the data itself works
18:15 pdurbin MaTt1337357: yeah, ideally we aren't attaching binary blobs to either RT or Redmine
18:15 sbmarks oh
18:15 MaTt1337357 but I don't know if i can go into depth with this one
18:16 MaTt1337357 :/
18:16 MaTt1337357 at the moment that is
18:16 sbmarks no sweat, you've helped a lot already
18:16 sbmarks I'll file a ticket when I know more
18:16 MaTt1337357 awesome
18:16 pdurbin +1
18:19 MaTt1337357 @sbmarks when you make the ticket you, you should specify which version of SPSS the file was made under
18:19 sbmarks kk
18:19 MaTt1337357 additionally, making a note that it's probably platform independent might be good
18:19 MaTt1337357 I'll add my 2 cents to the ticket when it gets posted
18:19 sbmarks meaning it fails on both my and your DVN?
18:20 MaTt1337357 yea
18:20 sbmarks nod nod
18:23 pdurbin sbmarks: can I get you opinion on something?
18:23 pdurbin your
18:35 MaTt1337357 joined #dvn
18:38 sbmarks sure
18:39 pdurbin are you a fan of q&a sites like stackoverflow or quora?
19:01 pdurbin the reason I ask is that we're thinking about an FAQ for DVN
19:02 pdurbin and rather than a static FAQ site, we *could* have it be a bit more of a living, breathing Q&A site with actual questions from users
19:02 pdurbin the other week I stood up a proof of concept at http://iqss.shapado.com
19:03 pdurbin that site is riddled with ads but we'd put it on a domain we own and not have ads, etc.
19:22 sbmarks i dunno, I guess I have mixed feelings about them. one one hand, it's nice to have the answering of FAQs be a bit democratized. On the other I find that it often doesn't function as an actual FAQ, and the same Qs get FAed over and over again
19:23 sbmarks also can be hard to get traction with a relatively small community
19:23 sbmarks (not to be a naysayer)
19:26 MaTt1337357 yea
19:26 MaTt1337357 these things kinda create a culture of… i don't even know
19:27 MaTt1337357 stackoverflow is a weird site in that it can be useful but it's just full of noise
19:27 MaTt1337357 i'm all for reducing white noise on the internet
19:34 pdurbin that's fair. we could always use Shapado anyway but not let users create accounts. just have the DVN team post and answer questions for now. could open it up later, especially as the community grows
19:35 pdurbin MaTt1337357: the creator of stackoverflow says that it has "big city problems" that other sites powered by the same engine (superuser, serverfault, etc.) don't have. the size of the community does matter
19:37 MaTt1337357 it just kinda gives incentive to spam help
19:38 MaTt1337357 any kinda "karma" system creates people who just seek it out and kinda game it
19:39 pdurbin I doubt we'd have the problem with a Q&A site just for DVN :)
19:39 MaTt1337357 hah
19:39 MaTt1337357 I think you're taking what I said out of context
19:39 pdurbin :)
19:39 MaTt1337357 you brought up stackoverflow
19:39 MaTt1337357 and how people feel about it
19:39 MaTt1337357 I answered that question
19:39 MaTt1337357 :DDDD
19:40 pdurbin it's not without its faults
20:06 MaTt1337357 left #dvn
20:10 sbmarks iirc, back in my day working with it, RT had some sort of bolt-on Knowledgebase creator
20:11 sbmarks can't remember what it was called
20:11 sbmarks but it wasn't very pretty
20:25 pdurbin you're thinking of RTFM, I think

20:30 MaTt1337357 joined #dvn
20:45 sbmarks yeah, that's the one.
