Pipe Dream Friday: drag and drop up/download functionality through WebDAV or whatever |
15:39 |
|
pdurbin |
sbmarks: for dvn? |
15:39 |
|
sbmarks |
yeah |
15:39 |
|
sbmarks |
we get so many questions |
15:40 |
|
pdurbin |
i'm not sure what webdav has to do with that |
15:40 |
|
sbmarks |
so many questions about this functionality, i mean |
15:40 |
|
sbmarks |
sorry, fair enough |
15:40 |
|
sbmarks |
We get a regular stream of users asking for a locally mountable filesystem where they can dump stuff that automatically gets ingested into dataverse |
15:41 |
|
pdurbin |
ah, i understand |
15:41 |
|
pdurbin |
better, anyway :) |
15:41 |
|
sbmarks |
haha |
15:41 |
|
sbmarks |
sorry |
15:41 |
|
sbmarks |
anyway, easy for me to say, much harder to work it into the way the software works, I know |
15:41 |
|
sbmarks |
but that is why it is Pipe Dream Friday |
15:42 |
|
pdurbin |
what about the metadata? |
15:42 |
|
pdurbin |
when you upload a file to a dataverse don't you have to enter a modicum of metadata? |
15:42 |
|
pdurbin |
and isn't that a good thing? |
15:42 |
|
sbmarks |
a modicum is right, it's basically just the study name |
15:42 |
|
sbmarks |
it is |
15:43 |
|
sbmarks |
it's a very good thing, and as a librarian I am the first to nag about proper metadata =) |
15:43 |
|
pdurbin |
so in your pipe dream... set the study name to the file name? |
15:43 |
|
sbmarks |
or give it a temporary name? |
15:44 |
|
sbmarks |
or don't trigger the ingest until you see a proper study.xml in the directory? |
15:44 |
|
pdurbin |
have you tried the new zip uploader? |
15:44 |
|
sbmarks |
no, I'm working on getting us upgraded today. It sounds great |
15:45 |
|
pdurbin |
might help. can upload many files at once |
15:45 |
|
pdurbin |
if you zip them up first |
15:45 |
|
sbmarks |
yeah, that is huge. |
15:45 |
|
pdurbin |
very popular with the uploaders :) |
15:45 |
|
sbmarks |
anyway, I know this is not a useful conversation, just shooting the breeze |
15:45 |
|
sbmarks |
more popular than call ing the administrator???? say it ain't so |
15:46 |
|
pdurbin |
sbmarks: get back to work |
15:46 |
|
sbmarks |
aye, aye! |
15:46 |
|
* pdurbin |
cracks whip |
15:46 |
|
pdurbin |
sbmarks: you're on 3.2? |
15:47 |
|
sbmarks |
not even. We're on 2.2.5 =\ I'm ebarassed to say it but you can just as easily go see if I lie |
15:47 |
|
pdurbin |
:) |
15:47 |
|
pdurbin |
i forget which is yours |
15:48 |
|
sbmarks |
http://dataverse.scholarsportal.info/ |
15:49 |
|
pdurbin |
old school |
15:49 |
|
pdurbin |
we don't list you on http://thedata.org ? |
15:50 |
|
sbmarks |
sure you do? or used to? |
15:50 |
|
sbmarks |
ontario council of university libraries |
15:50 |
|
sbmarks |
ah that's why it doesn't look like it |
15:51 |
|
pdurbin |
ok, we do already. good |
15:51 |
|
sbmarks |
we have some name confusion with the Scholars Portal/OCUL thing |
15:51 |
|
pdurbin |
we can change the name on the link if you want |
15:52 |
|
sbmarks |
no, no |
15:53 |
|
pdurbin |
ok |
21:14 |
|
sbmarks |
your shaming has been effective |
21:14 |
|
sbmarks |
our test instance is now up to 3.3 |
21:15 |
|
pdurbin |
sbmarks: nice :) |
21:18 |
|
sbmarks |
however, as I was upgrading the test instance, i saw a bunch of files still accessible in the new instance, dug a bit and realized that full paths are being stored in table studyfile |
21:19 |
|
sbmarks |
which is scary to me because I have been using a mounted volume to house the domain1/config/files directory. that volume is mounted on both production and test, and so the test server has immediate access to all those files |
21:20 |
|
sbmarks |
which will make migration easy, but it is super scary from the point of view that someone messing around on test could blow away production files |
21:20 |
|
sbmarks |
so I remounted it read only |
21:22 |
|
sbmarks |
not knowing much about design, is it considered best practice to keep the full path like that? |
21:24 |
|
pdurbin |
I can't really say. I don't think I've ever looked at the studytable and I didn't know full paths are in there |
21:24 |
|
pdurbin |
mounting readonly from your test instance seems prudent |
21:24 |
|
sbmarks |
it's no big deal, I'm just curious |
21:24 |
|
sbmarks |
testing the zip uploader now |
21:26 |
|
sbmarks |
ah, this is great |
21:28 |
|
pdurbin |
told ya ;) |
21:29 |
|
sbmarks |
yup |
