sbmarks: good morning |

ruebot: hi |
13:08 |
|
sbmarks |
pdurbin: hola! |
13:09 |
|
pdurbin |
can you please look at https://groups.google.com/d/msg/dataverse-community/wX92c_r_BMY/LNsQtBQJHugJ ? |
13:13 |
|
sbmarks |
ok |
13:14 |
|
sbmarks |
it looks nice |
13:14 |
|
sbmarks |
question: is there going to be such thing as a subnetwork administrator? |
13:14 |
|
pdurbin |
the mockups at http://thedata.org/blog/upcoming-changes-version-35-dataverse-network-subnetworks look nice, you mean? |
13:14 |
|
sbmarks |
yah |
13:14 |
|
pdurbin |
ok, but... |
13:15 |
|
pdurbin |
what if stuff is moving on the page |
13:15 |
|
pdurbin |
and your lizard brain is bothered by it? |
13:15 |
|
pdurbin |
or is that just me? |
13:17 |
|
sbmarks |
i'd have to actually see it to be sure, but maybe it seems a bit flashy |
13:18 |
|
pdurbin |
sbmarks: you can see it at http://dvn-build.hmdc.harvard.edu/dvn/ |
13:18 |
|
pdurbin |
hmm, I probably should have linked to that in my email to the list. whoops |
13:20 |
|
sbmarks |
yeah, i dunno. I think I'd prefer it to not move. this isn't necessarily a site for marketing stuff, you know? The marquee effect seems like more of an advertising thing |
13:22 |
|
sbmarks |
maybe an on/off option? |
13:22 |
|
sbmarks |
i'm not a UX guru so take it for whatever it's worth |
13:25 |
|
pdurbin |
it's a pretty serious website |
13:26 |
|
pdurbin |
stuff can move on my band's website |
13:26 |
|
pdurbin |
if I had a band |
13:26 |
|
sbmarks |
hehe |

uh oh, mheppler is here |

I don't even know where here is. |
13:37 |

mheppler: IRC is older than the web. things don't move :) |
13:40 |
|
pdurbin |
mheppler: here's my question. is this the first time things on the dvn homepage have moved? because nothing is moving at http://thedata.harvard.edu/dvn/ right now... |
13:41 |
|
* ruebot |
reads up-scroll |
13:41 |

mheppler |
Correct, this is the first animation added to the Dataverse. |
13:42 |
|
pdurbin |
probably people will love it and I'm just being weird |
13:43 |
|
ruebot |
what do you mean by stuff moving on the installation? do you mean a progress bar or something? |
13:44 |
|
mheppler |
I've already adjusted the setting on it, to slow it down for you once, but increasing the time between sliding animations. I could slow down the actual animation as well, so it's less jarring. |

Dataverse widget that will display "subnetworks" of dataverses, that have their own customization, search, etc. |
13:45 |
|
pdurbin |
ruebot: the subnetworks in the bottom left scroll by |

pdurbin |
mheppler: I guess I liked the old way when there was a simple list for me to click the subnetwork I want |
13:46 |
|
pdurbin |
old way being last week or whatever :) |
13:46 |
|
mheppler |
I saw in an IRC log from pdurbin that sbmarks referred to it as a marketing thing, and that is more of less what it is. |
13:46 |
|
ruebot |
oh, that is fine. |
13:46 |
|
ruebot |
lots of folks do stuff like that |
13:47 |
|
ruebot |
and the speed seems fine |
13:47 |
|
pdurbin |
well, subnetworks are certainly new. the motion will draw people's attention. effective marketing |

We're merging our IQSS social science DVN installation with the CfA astronomy DVN installation here at Harvard, and they don't want to lose their branding, or astronomy-specific search, etc. In order to allow them to keep some of their autonomy, we developed this "subnetwork" functionality. |
13:53 |
|
pdurbin |
mheppler: sbmarks asked about a "subnetwork administrator". there's no such thing, right? the regular network administrator is in charge of setting up subnetworks, right? |
13:53 |
|
mheppler |
And, in full disclosure, I wasn't the biggest fan of this widget either, but it was an idea that was passed down from the big boss lady. That said, I didn't think of any better solutions, so now we have a fancy animated widget on the site. |
13:54 |
|
sbmarks |
hehe |
13:56 |

mheppler |
pdurbin + sbmarks: Correct, there is no new role being created for this. This will be a NetworkAdmin controlled feature, which in it's first iteration may require some system admin assistance to set up, because we don't have a GUI for adding dataverses to a subnetwork in bulk. That will require database scripting. Unless something changes in the last week of dev. |
13:59 |
|
pdurbin |
mheppler: thanks |
13:59 |
|
sbmarks |
I'm not as worried about creating/migrating to the subnetworks as I am about being able to delegate certain administrative responsibilities to a subnetwork administrator. Things like group creation, etc. Our situation is we have a bunch of different universities and it would be great to be able to have them be largely autonomous in their day-to-day administration. |
13:59 |
|
sbmarks |
mheppler: yes, tyvm |
13:59 |
|
sbmarks |
sure that is a tall order. i may file a feature request for the future |
14:01 |
|
pdurbin |
sure. as mheppler said, this is the first iteration |
14:01 |
|
sbmarks |
nod nod |
14:02 |
|
pdurbin |
sbmarks: other places are thinking of that use case as well, I think. subnetwork for various schools that are part of a system |
14:02 |
|
mheppler |
That makes sense. The team at CfA is looking for something similar as well. Their request was not to have to "dig through" all the non-CfA/astronomy settings/dataverses in order to get to what they need to do. |

We'll make sure to come back to you for feedback on a feature request for an improved subnetwork admin workflow. |

Our road map aims to have a quick release for 3.6, by the end of June, that may be more bug fixes, than new features, so if something doesn't get done for that release, 3.7 won't be far behind it, and that might the developer bandwidth to incorporate subnetwork feedback. It will also give all our DVN installations a little while to get accustomed to the new feature, and get feedback to us. |
