19:22 skay hi, I work on researchcompendia.org and I just realized that this channel exists. cool
19:22 * skay idles
19:33 pdurbin skay: hi!
19:33 pdurbin skay: it's pretty quiet in #hackingscience :)
19:34 pdurbin right... here's where that channel was mentioned: https://github.com/researchcompendia/researchcompendia#resources
19:45 skay pdurbin: hi! yeah, it's just me and travis in there
19:47 skay no one else uses kanban either.
19:49 pdurbin skay: this thing? https://huboard.com/researchcompendia/researchcompendia
19:50 skay yeah, mostly it's me. I worked at orbitz before, and we used jira/greenhopper (or physical cards)
19:50 skay and I liked the work in progress visualization, and tried trello but wanted something like that which also integrated with github
19:51 pdurbin sure
19:51 skay speaking of orbitz, I was a java backend web services person there, but I've been working for victoria for the past year
19:51 pdurbin we're playing with trello: https://trello.com/b/ftBlrDFZ/dataverse-4-0
19:52 pdurbin and physical cards: https://twitter.com/thedataorg/status/403881376841093120 :)
19:53 skay how many team members do you have? it's just me as the lone programmer. Victoria is the PI and Jenn is the postdoc
19:54 skay I got to commiserate with my other friend who left orbitz to work in academia
19:54 skay he works on netlogo at northwestern
19:55 skay I throw some industry practices against the wall and see which ones stick with my team
19:56 pdurbin hmm...  6 or 7 maybe? could look at https://github.com/IQSS/dvn/graphs/contributors
19:56 pdurbin javaeebot: lucky netlogo northwestern
19:56 javaeebot pdurbin: http://ccl.northwestern.edu/netlogo/
19:57 pdurbin (I'm a backed Java person too) ... :)
19:57 pdurbin backend*
19:57 skay oh hey, if you know anyone who likes to do swing gui stuff (yegads) I will ask my friend about it
19:57 skay his job is doing a javascript implementation
19:57 pdurbin confused. netlogo is a swing app?
19:57 skay but they might get a grant to work o the legacy app thing
19:58 skay java app
19:58 skay desktop app, not webapp
19:59 pdurbin gotcha
20:00 * skay relurks
20:00 skay meeting!
20:00 pdurbin yeah. see you there :)

20:34 LyndsySimon We were using Trello here, but have moved to a whiteboard wall. I've using PivotalTracker in the past and liked it.
20:36 pdurbin skay: http://www.niso.org/workrooms/resourcesync/
20:38 skay thanks
20:39 skay I was using a corkboard, but since Jenn and Victoria and I all work remotely, the online one helps a little bit
20:46 pdurbin LyndsySimon: cool
20:46 pdurbin skay: LyndsySimon is with http://centerforopenscience.org
20:46 skay pdurbin: is there a test environment where I work against the latest apis? that may not be in prod yet?
20:47 skay pdurbin: we've met
20:47 skay :)
20:47 pdurbin LyndsySimon: you must have heard us talking about you guys ;)
20:47 skay a while back I "discovered" the concept of open science via my hackerspace
20:47 skay and most people I met were in to diybio or chemical engineering stuff and looked at things from a hackerspace point of view
20:48 pdurbin skay: well, this is my dev environment... my laptop: http://pdurbin.pagekite.me
20:48 skay and I didn't have any local folks interesting in cogsci, so I googled open science and psychology and found the osf guys
20:48 skay and a different type of "open"
20:48 skay :)
20:49 pdurbin (the latest code)
20:49 skay so, I am guessing I can get a vagrant box up and have the same thing?
20:49 skay and/or just run on my laptop as well...
20:49 pdurbin skay: you want to run dataverse on your laptop?
20:49 skay and maybe you have some sample dataverse networks or studies I can load?
20:50 skay perhaps, so I can code against the interface without needing to hit external site
20:50 pdurbin skay: you could spin up a 3.x version of our code with vagrant: https://github.com/dvn/dvn-install-demo
20:50 skay oh, what about 4.x? that's the upcoming major release?
20:50 pdurbin skay: no vagrant box for 4.x yet
20:51 skay store ALL THE THINGS
20:51 pdurbin skay: you can do API testing at http://dvn-demo.iq.harvard.edu
20:51 skay thank you
20:51 pdurbin :)
20:52 skay rackspace gave me a community account for "open science stuff"
20:52 skay so I have been running a researchcompendia webapp along with a staging site for the scipy conference
20:52 skay and so I was looking at size limits on rackspace cloudfiles
20:53 skay and they have a limitation where you need to cut things up in to 5 gig segments
20:53 skay but they let you go larger
20:53 skay I've been interacting with s3 but will start interacting with cloudfiles now
20:54 skay I was thinking for uploading big files to use client side js stuff (amazon has a js sdk for s3)
20:54 skay and cloudfiles has something similar (maybe not as sophi9sticated yet)
20:55 skay and you just need to sign a request in the backend to provide to the frontend to allow it to upload
20:55 LyndsySimon joined #dvn
20:55 skay anyway, this is cool. I will quiet down now
20:55 pdurbin well, as I just mentioned in the meeting, you could try uploading big files via our api: http://thedata.harvard.edu/guides/dataverse-api-main.html#data-deposit-api
20:56 skay yeah I was typing at hte same time, not good of me
20:56 skay I will
20:57 pdurbin great
