08:33 bencomp isn't it like 4:30 in Cambridge?
10:06 * pdurbin yawns
10:07 pdurbin bencomp: it was. thankfully, I was able to fall back asleep
10:08 bencomp pdurbin: I don't expect anyone to answer in the middle of the night, especially if it's about something not so relevant
10:09 pdurbin bencomp: so odd that your email to the dvn-auth list was split into two... and archived under different months: https://lists.iq.harvard.edu/pipermail/dvn-auth/2014-April/000004.html and https://lists.iq.harvard.edu/pipermail/dvn-auth/2013-September/000005.html
10:09 pdurbin bencomp: I saw this trouble before
10:19 pdurbin I guess I could open a ticket with the folks who run the list
10:21 pdurbin bencomp: do you guys develop from Mac, Windows, or Linux? I'm having this problem: NativeSPMacInstall, homebrew - http://shibboleth.net/pipermail/users/2014-April/014907.html
11:01 bencomp pdurbin: we all work with mac, but Eko has a CentOS VM for his development
11:13 pdurbin bencomp: ah, so he can just `yum install shibboleth` ... nice
11:23 bencomp yes, plus it helps to write server setup instructions in more detail
12:01 pdurbin bencomp: does he run his IDE within the CentOS VM? Or are you saying Eko runs his IDE on his Mac but he deploys to his CentOS VM?
12:03 bencomp pdurbin: I believe the latter
12:04 pdurbin bencomp: does he use Vagrant to set up the CentOS VM?
12:05 bencomp I don't think so
12:05 pdurbin bencomp: is the CentOS VM running on VirtualBox?
12:09 pdurbin balo: this reminds me of our conversation yesterday in ##shibboleth: http://irclog.perlgeek.de/shibboleth/2014-04-02
12:30 bencomp pdurbin: I misinformed you
12:31 balo :)
12:32 pdurbin balo: oh?
12:32 ijstokes joined #dvn
12:32 bencomp as it currently stands, Eko runs VMware Fusion with a CentOS WM, just for Shibboleth. He runs Eclipse with Glassfish inside on his Mac
12:32 bencomp and is currently having trouble to get environment variables from inside Glassfish
12:32 pdurbin bencomp: hmm, but somehow he is fronting Glassfish on his Mac with mod_shib running on the CentOS VM on VMware?
12:33 pdurbin ah. trouble
12:33 pdurbin not super suprising
12:33 pdurbin unfortunately
12:33 bencomp wait, I should just point him to webIRC
12:34 pdurbin bencomp: at the top of http://irclog.iq.harvard.edu/dvn/today I provide a link to http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=dvn
12:35 bencomp found it
12:42 bencomp can't force him to join btw
12:42 bencomp :)
12:43 pdurbin you can lead a horse to water but...
12:46 pdurbin ;)
12:50 pdurbin bencomp: if I were to set up a CentOS VM for my Dataverse 4.0 dev environment, I would do it with Vagrant and VirtualBox, both of which are free and open source
12:50 pdurbin the same combination I use here: https://github.com/dvn/dvn-install-demo
12:51 bencomp he has used Vagrant and VirtualBox for DVN demos
12:51 bencomp the CentOS vm proxies and uses testshib.org
12:52 pdurbin right. yes, I love test shib. I use it here: https://github.com/dvn/shibpoc
12:53 bencomp yeah,  a similar setup (a test page showing attributes) works
12:54 pdurbin right. https://github.com/dvn/shibpoc/tree/master/java/shibsppoc#show-the-attributes
12:54 bencomp but somehow the JSF in Glassfish cannot get to the attributes
12:54 bencomp debug shows null null null etc
12:55 pdurbin hmm
12:55 pdurbin works with JSP: https://github.com/dvn/shibpoc/blob/master/java/shibsppoc/src/main/webapp/shib.jsp

15:18 pdurbin skay: any update on this? Pull request from /rliebz · Issue #7 · IQSS/dvn-client-python - https://github.com/IQSS/dvn-client-python/issues/7
15:18 skay pdurbin: no, apologies.
15:18 pdurbin no need!
15:19 pdurbin I was just talking with Robert about it is all
15:19 pdurbin demo of the OSF pluging
15:19 skay I decided not to accept the PR out of the box because he was making some decisions beyond just style choices
15:19 pdurbin plugin*
15:19 pdurbin hmm ok
15:19 pdurbin well, we all want the merge to happen, right?
15:19 pdurbin (sanity check)
15:19 pdurbin or if not that specific merge... some merge
15:20 skay yes, not that specific merge...
15:20 pdurbin that's fine
15:20 pdurbin as long as the two branches come together some way
15:20 skay I think some benevolent dictatorship is needed here
15:20 pdurbin heh
15:20 skay I will put on a hat
15:20 pdurbin skay: as you see fit
15:21 skay and speak from what I like to see in other projects
15:21 skay (and it's not like my opinions are controversial, I just want to enumerate them so that we gather some consensus)
15:22 skay I want atomic commits -- so, things having to with style, I'd like those to be in their own commit
15:22 pdurbin yeah
15:22 skay I'd like to have those merged in so that it befcomes easy to start accepting idiomatic commits
15:22 skay from everyone
15:22 pdurbin skay: I was going to link to this conversation from https://github.com/IQSS/dvn-client-python/issues/7 but is https://github.com/IQSS/dvn-client-python/pull/5 a better place?
15:23 skay for things that make decisions, I'd like to see those in separate commits
15:23 skay and hte commits should be logical changesets
15:24 skay I think perhaps #5 is good
15:24 skay better
15:24 pdurbin yeah, more discussion there
15:24 pdurbin of I could make a new issue
15:24 pdurbin not about specific merges
15:24 pdurbin but about the two branches coming together in some way
15:24 skay maybe reject the pull request and ask for new ones
15:25 pdurbin well, the pull was already rejected
15:25 skay anyway, one reason why I havent' commented or made recommendations -- I don't like to say everything I just said without also having concrete suggestions and giving concrete feedback
15:26 pdurbin skay: you wrote "I reverted the merge I made from @rliebz and since there doesn't seem to be a way to reopen a pull request, I'm creating this issue to track it." -- https://github.com/IQSS/dvn-client-python/issues/7
15:26 pdurbin so maybe issue 7 is the better place
15:26 skay doh, I saw the green buttons and thought the PR got reopened somehow
15:26 skay yes, 7 is better
15:27 pdurbin skay: how about I clean up issue 7 a bit (change the title) and leave a comment and a link to this conversation?
15:27 skay that sounds good
15:29 skay maybe during pycon sprints we'll be able to spend some time on dvn-client, but I also want to spend time on researchcompendia, so I may be stacking up too many goals
15:30 skay I'd like to get a docker proof of concept working
15:31 skay there are docker people roaming around pycon so maybe I can pick their brains
15:31 axfelix joined #dvn
15:32 skay btw, you may have opinions about what makes research code re-usable -- and relatedly, what makes data reusable, so maybe leave comment here and open an issue about reusable research data? https://github.com/mozillascience/code-research-object/issues/2
15:32 ijstokes1 joined #dvn
15:32 skay since it follows from attempting to make re-usable code that one should provide information about the data the code uses
15:32 skay and parameters, and so on
15:32 pdurbin skay: done! merge rliebz/dvn-client-python into IQSS/dvn-client-python · Issue #7 · IQSS/dvn-client-python - https://github.com/IQSS/dvn-client-python/issues/7
15:33 pdurbin well, the merge isn't done... the title change and comment are done :)
15:33 pdurbin skay: OSF folks are going to pycon
15:34 skay Jenn and I are going. I think you met her on skype briefly
15:34 pdurbin yep
15:35 pdurbin sivoais: https://github.com/Network-of-BioThings/nob-hq/wiki/1st-Network-of-BioThings-Hackathon
15:56 sivoais ooh! :-) *bookmarks* This will be very handy. I'd love this for when I'm reading neuroscience papers
15:57 pdurbin :)
