Time S Nick Message
02:21 pdurbin bencomp: I just opened INC01342404 about the mailing list removal confirmation notice for mailing list dvn-auth you reported at http://irclog.iq.harvard.edu/dataverse/2015-07-14#i_21661 which I have since seen myself. Hopefully we'll get to the bottom of this.

10:13 pdurbin yikes!
10:45 pdurbin bencomp: yeah, I agree that the *other* message I forwarded to you is probably just regular spam
10:50 pdurbin 500 is the most I've heard but two other people have reported receiving 300 messages. What a mess.
10:50 pdurbin I looked around in the admin area of https://lists.iq.harvard.edu/mailman/listinfo/dvn-auth but didn't see a way to solve the problem.
11:02 pdurbin bencomp: the nuclear option is to unsubscribe everyone, shut down the list, and create a new list, possibly somewhere else. (Or just use the main Google Group: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/dataverse-community .) I've wanted to remove "dvn" from the list name anyway since it's a legacy term.

11:59 bencomp don't forget https://github.com/IQSS/dataverse/issues/775 on Code style, but I just created a new issue that covers a major aspect of Dataverse: https://github.com/IQSS/dataverse/issues/2357
11:59 bencomp Metadata!
12:03 bencomp pdurbin: jinx
12:05 pdurbin :)
12:53 pdurbin bencomp: 2357 is a very good writeup. thanks. should we continue to figure out what to do about dvn-auth though?
13:04 bencomp pdurbin: did you get any response from the system administrators?
13:05 pdurbin bencomp: nope. thanks for posting this, by the way: [dvn-auth] Abnormal mailing list emails are being investigated - https://lists.iq.harvard.edu/pipermail/dvn-auth/2015-July/000030.html
13:06 bencomp if this was a one time attack we're in less of a hurry I guess
13:10 pdurbin it's quite frustrating
13:10 pdurbin bencomp: do we still want the dvn-auth list? I wanted to rename it anyway.
13:12 bencomp pdurbin: did you ask for a server for Discourse? :)
13:12 bencomp I'm looking at how easy it is to create a Google Group
13:12 pdurbin bencomp: nope. I was waiting to hear you say that you'd be responsible for it. :)
13:13 bencomp right :)
13:19 pdurbin ah, someone else created another ticket: INC01342961
13:20 bencomp those ticket IDs don't mean a lot to me ;)
13:20 pdurbin sorry. it's just so I can look them up later :)
13:21 bencomp I can't promise to manage a Discourse system, even though setup should take less than 30 minutes http://blog.discourse.org/2014/04/install-discourse-in-under-30-minutes/
13:28 bencomp pdurbin: let's move to Google Groups
13:28 bencomp I have to do some other stuff now, so unfortunately I can't make it happen right now
13:29 bencomp maybe we should consult the CG too?
13:35 pdurbin bencomp: yeah? Google Groups? Do you still like the idea of having a separate list?
13:39 bencomp pdurbin: I consider the community list to have a more user oriented focus
13:40 bencomp and the auth group discusses development level topics, I'd hope
13:40 pdurbin bencomp: ok, makes sense, just checking :)
13:41 pdurbin bencomp: but yes, I think we should at least run it by people who are thinking of other community groups
13:41 pdurbin I'll run it by the coordinator of http://community.dataverse.org/community-groups/api.html ;)
13:41 bencomp hehe
14:49 bencomp pdurbin: this may not be your part of the code, but I noticed some Handle related code that seems to be able to register handles for datasets. Is that full support for handle?
14:56 pdurbin bencomp: I just sent a link to your question to https://github.com/sekmiller
14:56 pdurbin not sure if he'll be able to join us here but I don't believe we have handle support
14:57 pdurbin bencomp: are you thinking something about handle or ezid should go in https://docs.google.com/document/d/1GLky44JbtCNhGuavLXGEP8WPNdjbyHNxalEGjR78MaA/edit?usp=sharing ?
14:57 bencomp pdurbin: thanks, that's what I thought

15:01 bencomp sekmiller: does Dataverse 4 support registering handles for datasets?
15:02 bencomp (hi, btw :))
15:02 sekmiller Hello.  It does not.
15:02 bencomp pdurbin: as you may have noticed, yes I do think this need to go in the installation guide
15:03 sekmiller it's on our todo list, but I don't know when it will be put on the schedule
15:03 bencomp sekmiller: is the code in HandlenetServiceBean used anywhere?
15:04 bencomp Netbeans says it is
15:07 sekmiller It looks like we used it to update the target urls of migrated datasets - but not to mint new handles
15:07 bencomp not having handle support looks like a blocker for migration for us <- does that help getting it on the schedule?
15:08 sekmiller probably
15:08 bencomp good :) tell scolapasta! ;)
15:09 sekmiller will do.  Best
