Phil - Thanks for helping with the vagrant set up. vagrant box list reveals that there are not any installed boxes. As to the goal, what I would like to do is explore the metadata generation features and submission process. Is there a better way? thx, stevan

dataverse-user: you want to create a new metadata block? To add to the list at https://github.com/IQSS/dataverse/tree/v4.3/scripts/api/data/metadatablocks ?

thanks, Phil. Kinda', sorta', those look more like templates. Let's take a tabular dataset. How do I generate the metadata appropriate for DV, then load it in my repo?

dataverse-user: would logging into https://demo.dataverse.org and playing around help? Or do you need to be able to log in as a superuser?

that looks promsing, thanks, phil. I would prefer to avoid superuser so let me play a bit in there with those privileges, and I will touch base if i get stuck.

dataverse-user: sounds good. Sorry Vagrant didn't work out for you.

I got the impression that having dataverse installed locally would be required to accomplish the functions of repo management, data ingestion, etc...but I guess not, sorry if I misread

dataverse-user: oh, no, not really. Lots of people host their data at https://dataverse.harvard.edu and being "Admin" on their dataverse is often enough.
17:04
pdurbin
Basically, when you create a dataverse, you are "Admin" on it. This is different than being a superuser.

it's nice that *something* finally came along to replace phpbb

heh. exactly

given that facebook and discus and whatnot are so dominant that locally-hosted forums were really marginalized for the past decade

I run another instance for a side project of mine and I'm really happy with it

we're still using Google Groups in Dataverse land, but I guess that's fine. I kind of prefer mailing lists to forums
19:20
garnett
unfortunately I confessed that to my coworkers and now managing ours is usually my problem too :)
19:20
garnett
yeah, google groups are good, most projects I work with use them
