13:08 bjonnh thx
13:09 pdurbin yw
13:09 bjonnh neat S3 support
13:09 pdurbin yeah, and we plan to use it in production
13:09 bjonnh http://www.zenko.io/
13:09 bjonnh ^
13:09 bjonnh think about that
13:10 pdurbin cute dog: http://j29831emh5lwzq1euii4vztg.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Zenko.jpg
13:10 bjonnh hah
13:10 bjonnh well it allows you to have S3 servers on premise that store on azure, S3, wherever
13:11 bjonnh using the S3 protocol
13:11 pdurbin interesting, and it's open source
13:20 bjonnh yes
13:20 bjonnh I met them a few month ago
13:20 bjonnh really nice people
13:35 pdurbin I just got my Dataverse/Glassfish image/container to run as non-root.
13:40 bjonnh \o/
13:40 bjonnh YAY
13:40 bjonnh that's great
13:40 pdurbin I mean, it's a complete mess but I can log in as dataverseAdmin. :)
13:40 bjonnh well that's better that what I got
13:40 bjonnh lets get rid of glassfish now ;)
13:40 bjonnh where is donsizemore
13:40 bjonnh :p
13:41 pdurbin maybe having a partying after the lovely shout out we gave him at https://dataverse.org/blog/dataverse-48-release
13:42 pdurbin Dataverse 4.8 is out, by the way.

14:07 pdurbin speak of the devil
14:11 bjonnh donsizemore: o/
14:11 bjonnh donsizemore: what's your opinion on getting rid of glassfish
14:13 donsizemore @bjonnh i'm not a java programmer. but i did deploy dataverse in payara 5 once =)
14:14 bjonnh yes I did see that
14:14 bjonnh what did you think of it?
14:14 donsizemore @bjonnh i'm not sure what the compatibility would be like with other application servers
14:14 bjonnh I'm not a java programmer either
14:14 pdurbin I saw it too: https://github.com/payara/Payara/issues/532#issuecomment-315408770 :)
14:14 bjonnh but I'm annoyed that we have to use horribly old software and be stuck with it
14:15 donsizemore @bjonnh i didn't do very much with it other than examine the logs post-deployment, but IIRC it let me sign in and basic functionality was there
14:15 bjonnh do you still have the config you used?
14:15 bjonnh or anything that may help?
14:16 donsizemore @bjonnh i think i nuked it. but it didn't take me very long and i'm happy to try again? i think it was the release candidate of payara 5 that broke the logjam
14:19 pdurbin Please talk to me about Glassfish 5 vs Payara 5. Why would you want to run one or the other?
14:29 donsizemore particularly for dataverse, i like stable. i tried the payara installation at your urging, but if glassfish5 is more enterprisey, i'd appreciate not having surprises under the hood
14:31 pdurbin Heh, well, I was looking for any way to not be stuck on Glassfish 4.1 forever. Payara is supposed to be a drop in replacement so I figured maybe a version of Payara newer that 4.1 would work. That was my hope, anyway.
14:32 donsizemore have we tried to deploy under glassfish5? i can do that this morning
14:33 pdurbin Heh. No. It's been out for less than a week: https://groups.google.com/d/msg/dataverse-dev/imX1Xjven44/BD6xF-LwAAAJ
14:34 pdurbin donsizemore: I'm surprised to hear you think Glassfish 5 is more enterprisey than Payara. Payara will let you pay for support. Oracle won't let you pay for support for Glassfish anymore.
14:37 donsizemore @pdurbin oh, i thought they were the early community release deal out ahead of glassfish. if oracle isn't behind glassfish...
14:39 pdurbin Oracle is behind Glassfish in the sense that it's the reference implementation for a Java EE server. But! Have you heard that Java EE is moving to the Eclipse Foundation?
14:40 pdurbin See https://groups.google.com/d/msg/dataverse-dev/P57Aw9NxNwk/mYrUHQczBwAJ

17:57 donsizemore @pdurbin bad news: Dataverse-4.8 and the Payara 5 Alpha no longer play nicely
17:58 pdurbin boo
17:59 donsizemore @pdurbin want me to open an issue with them, or an issue with IQSS, or just wait for the beta?
18:01 pdurbin donsizemore: well, hold on. Is your goal to run Glassfish 5 or Payara 5?
18:01 donsizemore i thought you preferred payara
18:03 pdurbin donsizemore: I want what you want. What do you want? :)
18:03 pdurbin and what bjonnh wants and what Thalia_UM wants
18:04 pdurbin bret: are you running Dataverse? I forget.
18:04 pdurbin andrewSC: you're running Dataverse right? I want what you want too. :)
18:04 bret no I haven't
18:04 andrewSC pdurbin: lol yes
18:04 bret didn't realize it was a program
18:05 donsizemore @pdurbin i never know what i want until somebody else has it and i don't
18:05 bret also im not involved in scholarly activity much these days
18:05 pdurbin bret: oh, well, you're welcome here anyway. Tell your friends. :)
18:06 pdurbin I thought I wanted Docker but now I'm not so sure. ;)
18:08 Thalia_UM Philip I need your help
18:08 Thalia_UM I want to try loading the dataverse project into NetBeans
18:09 pdurbin Thalia_UM: ok, should work
18:09 Thalia_UM but I want to know if a version is required and what more has to be installed or done
18:09 pdurbin I'm using Netbeans 8.2 if that helps.
18:10 Thalia_UM I already downloaded Source code (zip)
18:10 pdurbin donsizemore: like bjonnh you probably don't want to be on an old version of Glassfish (4.1).
18:11 Thalia_UM It's the version I have
18:13 Thalia_UM Which version of glassfish do I have to install? and should I install it in netbeans?
18:13 pdurbin Thalia_UM: you must use Glassfish 4.1. You can't use a newer version. That's what we're talking about, actually.
18:13 Thalia_UM Ok
18:14 Thalia_UM How to install glassfish?
18:15 pdurbin Thalia_UM: http://guides.dataverse.org/en/4.8/developers/dev-environment.html#glassfish
18:15 Thalia_UM I use Windows
18:15 pdurbin Windows? Uh oh. Please see https://github.com/IQSS/dataverse/issues/3927 Thalia_UM
18:18 Thalia_UM Thank you Philip :3
18:18 Thalia_UM I'm gonna check it
18:19 pdurbin sure
18:20 pdurbin donsizemore: I do think you should create an issue. But do you want to run Glassfish 5 or Payara 5? I don't have a strong preference.
18:21 pdurbin I'm happy to type more about what I see the differences are if you want. But I also want to hear what you think.
19:01 donsizemore @pdurbin i'd want whatever's the most stable and dependable. it does sound like payara has more of a community behind it
19:29 Thalia_UM joined #dataverse
19:49 pdurbin donsizemore: people in #glassfish seem pretty excited about Payara. That's my impression anyway. And for what it's worth, today Gustavo is wearing a Payara t-shirt. :)
19:49 donsizemore @pdurbin payara it is =)
19:51 pdurbin donsizemore: so do you want to create an issue in the Dataverse repo for Payara 5?
19:53 donsizemore @pdurbin i'm happy to and I can document where deployment breaks under payara (creating EJB timers) but the 5 release is only in alhpa
19:53 donsizemore ^^alpha
19:53 pdurbin oh, right. hmm
19:53 pdurbin So youre thinking on Payara vs Glassfish is about the community behind them?
20:12 pdurbin your*
