12:00 poikilotherm Good morning America...
12:03 pdurbin poikilotherm: heh. Good morning. I'm curious what you think about the conversation I had with a friend in #glassfish last night: https://javabot.evanchooly.com/logs/%23glassfish/2018-11-20
12:41 MrK Hi
12:49 pdurbin How's it going, MrK?
13:05 MrK pdurbin: Pretty alright, I have managed for testing purposes deploy dataverse on cloud and comparing to standard deployment it is much easier.
13:09 MrK poikilotherm: I saw that issue https://github.com/IQSS/dataverse/issues/5292 and I would also add up to this, database versioning.
13:09 poikilotherm Sry, was AFK for a spontaneous meeting
13:10 poikilotherm MrK: I think that train left already...
13:10 * poikilotherm searches the issue
13:10 poikilotherm https://github.com/IQSS/dataverse/issues/4980
13:11 poikilotherm And it seems IQSS opted for scripting instead of framework
13:12 poikilotherm pdurbin: I read that and sth came to my mind right away: why doesn't he use @DataSourceDefinition? It is combinable with Config API in Payara and others
13:13 poikilotherm That way he would not need asadmin for the DB
13:13 pdurbin poikilotherm: hmm, you should tell him about it. Nice guy. Comments on Dataverse issues.
13:13 poikilotherm And he doesn't seem to like env vars, as he is still using domain configuration for properties. That's ok, but you don't have to.
13:14 pdurbin MrK: I'm glad you're deployment is going well. Do you need anything?
13:14 pdurbin your*
13:14 poikilotherm I liked his insight about using the container limits in the JVM...
13:15 pdurbin yeah
13:16 pdurbin poikilotherm: are you thinking about leaving a comment on that Glassfish issue about Docker? Asking if anyone has made images available yet? I'm not sure if that's the best place to ask though.
13:18 poikilotherm You mean on the Github Issue?
13:18 pdurbin Yeah, that one you found.
13:18 pdurbin I see "Contact the project developers via the project's "dev" list" at https://github.com/eclipse-ee4j/glassfish/blob/master/CONTRIBUTING.md
13:19 pdurbin So maybe it's better to ask on that dev list?
13:19 poikilotherm From the response on the GH issue I am pretty unsure if it makes sense to bother with them now. They seem pretty busy getting the 5.1 release out of the door and a Dockerfile is certainly not part of it... ;-)
13:20 poikilotherm -with
13:20 pdurbin yeah, I had the same thought
13:20 pdurbin "we know, we know"
13:20 MrK pdurbin: Ah man I quite don't understand it, using flyway even if it would mean some work would be so much easier, I've used it before.
13:20 pdurbin but who knows what they'd say. I hope they'd be friendly about it
13:21 pdurbin MrK: ah! None of us have used flyway. No experience with it.
13:21 pdurbin MrK: do you want to make a pull request? :)
13:21 poikilotherm Maybe Göttingen could help out here? :-D
13:21 MrK pdurbin: Do you think if we managed to make flyway work the pull request would be aprooved?
13:23 cdsp-rmo joined #dataverse
13:23 pdurbin MrK: I don't always get what I want so it's hard to say. Maybe you could start by leaving a comment on https://github.com/IQSS/dataverse/issues/4980
13:23 poikilotherm As far as I can tell, you need to convince mdunlap, Gustavo and landreev... And they aren't easy to satisfy from what I can see from the app server discussion ;-)
13:24 pdurbin poikilotherm: did you ever get any replies to your email?
13:25 poikilotherm None yet...
13:25 pdurbin :(
13:26 poikilotherm I hope I didn't make them upset by the way I tried to share my vision and convience people to get on the boat
13:26 pdurbin Not all of us are working today. And Thursday and Friday are a holiday. Thanksgiving.
13:26 poikilotherm Ok
13:26 poikilotherm Good to know
13:27 poikilotherm pdurbin: I am working on splitting up #5289
13:27 pdurbin poikilotherm: I was sort of pitching your idea as "run `mvn deploy`" rather than running a Perl script. I hope that's a good way of putting it.
13:28 poikilotherm Oh I really wish there would be a platform to communicate with them more directly
13:28 poikilotherm Maybe that would be easier for all of us
13:29 pdurbin It's not fun for me to be the middle man.
13:29 poikilotherm All this stuff is a rather complex matter with many shades and knobs to turn. I really appreciate your work being that middle man, but for things like this it makes it more complicated than it should be
13:30 poikilotherm With small contributions a community officer like you is the right thing to have, but I think this left "small" a while ago :-D
13:30 poikilotherm No offense - you really do a great job!
13:30 poikilotherm And pameyer too
13:31 cdsp-rmo hello world ! :)
13:31 pdurbin thanks
13:32 pdurbin cdsp-rmo: hi! I moved your pull request to code review and we were talking about it last night with ADA.
13:32 poikilotherm Hi cdsp-rmo :-)
13:32 cdsp-rmo Yes, thanks again for this. Anything to ask about it ?
13:32 MrK hi
13:33 pdurbin cdsp-rmo: ADA migrated a lot of dataset from NESSTAR: https://dataverse.ada.edu.au/dataverse/ada?q=nesstar . Your solution on migrates metadata, right? Not files.
13:33 poikilotherm pdurbin: about splitting #5289: I will remove the AWS/TrueZIP stuff and save it for later. Will keep the dep stuff inside. Going to change to PR again to point to 5288 again, so this can be merged and leave 5274 open.
13:33 cdsp-rmo yes, it's only ddi, nothing about files
13:34 cdsp-rmo incuding the files in the dataset would be ... very situational. Maybe with direct downloads in ddi file
13:34 pdurbin cdsp-rmo: ok, ADA might contribute a script or whatever to migrate the files too. From NESSTAR.
13:35 cdsp-rmo okay ! Sounds cool
13:35 pdurbin cdsp-rmo: a lot of people are out for Thanksgiving so you may not see any movement until next week. I'm not even sure who was objecting to anything in your pull request before. Hopefully they will be satisfied. :)
13:36 MrK pdurbin: Ah yeah about features, we have managed to make https://github.com/IQSS/dataverse/issues/5280 feature, should we wait for a design team to look into it or just make pull request?
13:36 pdurbin poikilotherm: as long as the app doesn't break :)
13:36 pdurbin MrK: sorry, but you must wait for the design team and they are very busy.
13:37 pdurbin MrK: I can point you toward other bugs to fix if you want. :)
13:37 cdsp-rmo pdurbin : it was kcondon, given that some cases (while specifying doi, mostly) didn't worked. Everything should be fine now, for those cases at least :)
13:37 pdurbin It doesn't seem fair. You didn't introduce the bugs. We did. :)
13:38 pdurbin cdsp-rmo: ok, thanks. Let me take a quick look and see if I feel like it's ok to move it to QA.
13:38 pdurbin cdsp-rmo: oh, I requested code review from mdmADA who is from ADA
13:38 cdsp-rmo okay. Any futur release date in mind ? (with or without my push, just wondering)
13:39 cdsp-rmo oh my, sorry, I may misread :(
13:39 pdurbin cdsp-rmo: I moved it to QA. Looks fine. Thanks.
13:40 cdsp-rmo yeaaaah, thanks :)
13:40 pdurbin cdsp-rmo: I almost never know when the next release will come out or what it will be called.
13:40 cdsp-rmo ok ^^
13:41 cdsp-rmo I may take a look at the multiple fields case now ( https://github.com/IQSS/dataverse/issues/5164 )
13:42 pdurbin MrK: if you're close to a pull request, I guess you could go ahead and make it. But I wouldn't spend a lot of time on it. Maybe just make a pull request based on whatever you have in your branch.
13:42 cdsp-rmo I also have a question about zip files in dataset: from what I tried, whenever you upload a zip file, it is unpacked directly at the upload. Is there any chance that this automatic unpack may ... change ? Or at least give an option ? Because we have some datas that require to be zipped, given that the hierarchy HAS to be preserved :S
13:43 pdurbin cdsp-rmo: ok. Please note in my most recent comment that there are a lot of assumptions in the code about there being a single depositor. You'll have to touch a fair amount of code.
13:43 cdsp-rmo yes, that's why I wanted to finish the ddi import first, because this new task may be very time consuming ;)
13:44 pdurbin cdsp-rmo: maybe you could work on the issue bjonnh opened: https://github.com/IQSS/dataverse/issues/3439
13:44 cdsp-rmo oh, thanks a lot ! I tried to find the correct issues, but ended up in issues about sizes mostly :(
13:45 pdurbin cdsp-rmo: it's somewhat the same situation that MrK is in where the change we wants to make has some UI impact. Maybe this is less impact? Just a tiny checkbox? I don't know. Lots of interest in the community is not having to double zip files all the time.
13:47 cdsp-rmo I see some comments ya. I assume the change may not be too big yes
13:47 cdsp-rmo (UI side I mean)
13:47 cdsp-rmo Given the impact this feature has on our dataverse project, I may work on that ticket before the multiple depositors thing
13:48 cdsp-rmo loosing hierarchy is critical :(

13:51 pdurbin cdsp-rmo: sounds great. Oh, one more thing.
13:53 pdurbin cdsp-rmo: you asked for setup instructions for metadata blocks and I hope you like what I wrote. Feedback is welcome: https://github.com/IQSS/dataverse/pull/5251/files
13:53 pdurbin cdsp-rmo: you can find an HTML version here for now: http://guides.dataverse.org/en/4821-make-data-count/admin/metadatacustomization.html
13:57 pdurbin poikilotherm: still around? I had one more thought on the communication thing. I guess it's for MrK too.
13:58 pdurbin Since you're both interested in Slack, which I think is terrible for open source projects. :)
14:00 MrK Yeah I'm not a fan of paid chat history, even discord for gamers has this as free feature.
14:01 cdsp-rmo pdurbin: oh nice, thanks !
14:03 poikilotherm Ping
14:04 poikilotherm I am happy to use Gitter
14:04 poikilotherm As long as this helps getting more devs into direct communication
14:05 poikilotherm Or whatever you come up with :-)
14:07 poikilotherm pdurbin: I just cleaned up #5274, #5288 and #5289. I resist opening another issue, altough #5288 will not be solved by a merged #5289. Dunno how you would like to depict that in Waffle
14:07 poikilotherm Whatever works for you as long as #5274 and #5288 are kept open :-D
14:08 pdurbin poikilotherm MrK: I proposed a talk for next year's LibrePlanet (local conference) about Gitter vs Slack etc: http://wiki.greptilian.com/talks/ideas/transparency-in-chat-culture-gitter-vs-irc-slack-and-the-rest/
14:08 pdurbin "The culture of transparency Gitter brings to chat is healthy for free software. IRC, XMPP, Slack, and almost every other chat system encourage decision making behind closed doors."
14:09 poikilotherm pdurbin: Sound great. Carry on :-)
14:12 pdurbin heh
14:12 pdurbin we'll see if the talk gets accepted. and if I decide to actualy give it :)
14:14 pdurbin Anyway, what I'm working on now is support for Make Data Count and I'd love feedback on this issue: https://github.com/IQSS/dataverse/issues/4821
14:16 MrK Oh that's cool
14:24 poikilotherm 4821 looks pretty good as far as I can see from a high level perspective
14:46 poikilotherm pdurbin: I just commented on the GH issue for Glassfish 5.0 Dockerfile: https://github.com/eclipse-ee4j/glassfish/issues/22598#issuecomment-440687909

15:41 pdurbin poikilotherm thanks, I just opened this: https://github.com/AdamBien/docklands/issues/28
15:42 poikilotherm :-)
15:42 poikilotherm For now I am basing https://github.com/poikilotherm/dataverse/tree/5292-small-container on Payara, but will write a script that generates asadmin commands (brrrrrr... feels weird)
15:43 poikilotherm Have to run now, pick up my little hackers
