If anyone would care to take a look, I'm interested in feedback on this pull request I made yesterday to add a fake PID provider: https://github.com/IQSS/dataverse/pull/5399
10:39
poikilotherm
Good "morning" pdurbin... Seems like you are waking up earlier every day :-D
10:39
poikilotherm
Do you want me to add review to the PR?
10:39
poikilotherm
Or should I just share some comments here
11:11
poikilotherm
Oh I just saw you requested me to review already :-D

It's about five minutes until sunrise. You're right. I did get up a bit early today.

pdurbin
poikilotherm: here is fine. Whatever. Oh, and was in timers you wanted feedback on. I mentioned to Leonid you're looking for him. He likes your timer idea.
12:00
pdurbin
marinohc: hi. Welcome.
12:09
poikilotherm
pdurbin: I just commited a review :-)
12:11
poikilotherm
Thx for the feedback on timers. Does this imply that I should do actual codework now?
12:12
poikilotherm
I am AFK for a short time. Need something for lunch...

Re :-)
12:31
pdurbin
I don't know. I guess I would suggest leaving a comment on the issue to ask.
12:32
poikilotherm
OK
12:34
pdurbin
thanks for the review!
12:34
poikilotherm
Sure :-) Hope it helps
12:35

I'm somewhat inclined to not spend too much time on the fake PID provider. I'd like to get something merged. We can always make improvements later. Small chunks.
12:35
pdurbin
I don't want to gold plate it too much.
12:38

12:39
poikilotherm
Maybe you could add the instanceof to the if of alreadyExists() below?
12:40
pdurbin
Yeah, I thought about doing that. I agree that I don't like the duplication. Good feedback.
12:41
pdurbin
I like avoiding double coding but once something is merged I can always beg the community to make improvements. :)
12:46
poikilotherm
Yeah :-) I would prefer a cleaner approach from the start, but as this is primarily for dev purposes, this seems to be ok.
14:13

pdurbin: kcondon seems pretty crammed these days...

Just looked at the Waffle Dashboard
14:15

That really is a lot of stuff to look at...
14:16
pdurbin
It really is.

@donsizemore - how goes the upgrading?

* pdurbin
thought he was done
15:26
pameyer
you might be right
15:27
donsizemore
we're done so far as i know. i do need to put up a Big Red Announcement about the DataCite outage this weekend
15:27
pameyer
does the ORCID outage matter for you?
15:27
pameyer
same day as datacite
15:31
pdurbin
donsizemore: a couple of your birds have gone missing
15:32
donsizemore
@pameyer we've talked about ORCID but the library gets involved and... i haven't heard more about it
15:32
pameyer
@donsizemore https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/orcid-api-users/IBMbGNCGiJ4 if you're curious; but the short version is they're having an outage 12/15 too
15:32
donsizemore
@pdurbin yes, thu-mai wanted TwoRavens removed because it threw so many parsing errors and is difficult for new users
15:33
pdurbin
She knows her stuff.
15:34
pdurbin
donsizemore: can you or juancorr reply to "Experience data with growth in userbase and storage needed for new dataverse"? https://groups.google.com/d/msg/dataverse-community/b29o4ri2m9s/zxaO9WWWBQAJ
15:35
pdurbin
pameyer: you could also give your perspective, of course. I assume even after the switch the rate of growth will be steady?
15:36
pameyer
pdurbin: I don't know if it's possible to answer that without knowing more about the target users
15:36
pdurbin
yeah, wide variety, I'm sure
15:37
pameyer
yup. different domains have different storage ranges; and the distribution of interested users probably also varies widely
15:37
pdurbin
I could weigh in that Make Data Count support will mean that bytes transferred will start to get measured. But I'd rather a production installation reply first. MDC is future stuff.
15:38
pdurbin
free data hosting helps bring in the users and the growth :)
15:42
pameyer
pdurbin: fyi, the gremlins I ran into yesterday haven't woken up yet. so I can actually kick the tires on 5327
15:43
pdurbin
oh good
15:43
pameyer
still no idea about why though :<
15:43
pdurbin
meanwhile DatasetsIT failed on develop: https://github.com/IQSS/dataverse/issues/5400
15:44

I saw that one, but hadn't dug into it

I'm about to.

jonas91
so i hijacked https://github.com/IQSS/dataverse/issues/5104 (last comment) but i really don't want to leave that mess as is
16:35
pdurbin
ah, that poor issue
16:35
pdurbin
stuck in "Community Dev"

pdurbin
"I'm facing the issue that the sources I want to harvest from are heterogeneous and don't necessarily present the datasets I need in one set"
16:37
donsizemore
@jonas91 i've been writing spaghetti python to deal with that very issue
16:37
pdurbin
mmm
16:37
jonas91
hi don

=)
16:38
donsizemore
i'm being dragged, kicking and screaming to lunch but i'd love to collaborate/commiserate as the case may be
16:39
pdurbin
jonas91: this might be good as a post to https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/dataverse-community ... others like donsizemore might be struggling with these questions and might have ideas
16:40
jonas91
don, go have lunch! i need to leave soon anyways
16:40
pdurbin
jonas91: yeah it should be beer thirty for you by now. Go make a dataset!
16:42
jonas91
i have basketball tonight. i can make a dataset of my 2/3-pointers and rebounds. but it's a boring analysis if every median/mean/mode is 0
16:42
jonas91
but seriously, right now i just want to clean the issue-mess i left
16:43
pdurbin
Well, we're just glad you're back from the dead.
16:44
pdurbin
You're quite welcome to create a new issue. Or like I said, you could post to the dataverse-community list.
16:44
jonas91
i was trying to base my workflows in a workflow software - but i never got anywhere with it
16:44
pdurbin
oh yeah
16:44
pdurbin
see, out of sight, out of mind... I forgot about that
16:45
jonas91
that would be a great piece of discussion für the Open Science Days!
16:45

:)
16:49

I need some lunch and a walk.
18:36
pdurbin
maybe a punching bag
18:39
pameyer
I don't know of a punching bag in your neighborhood; but there's that basement chill out spot
18:50
pameyer
pdurbin: I see what you mean
18:56
pdurbin
Maybe I should keep the phoenix server around.
18:57
pameyer
or maybe we can replace it with a phoenix cloud
18:58
pameyer
from reading the jsf xhtml, I'm not 100% sure how the dom structure got mixed up
18:58
pdurbin
me neither, I'm completely lost
18:58
pameyer
but I'm also on a later commit on develop
18:59
pameyer
re-running the ITs to get some example datasets so I can look at it
19:01
pdurbin
thanks
19:02
pameyer
can confirm it's still busted there. can't even get vnu to finish telling me about all the errors
19:07
pdurbin
vnu?
19:07
pameyer
local way of running the Nu html checker you ran
19:07
pdurbin
oh, neat
19:07
pameyer
vnu.jar ; can track down the url after lunch if you're interested
19:08

meh, just knowing it's possible is interesting

well, in the pull request I just made I'm at least trying to help identify the culprit: https://github.com/IQSS/dataverse/pull/5405

rebuilding, but I think you're right about potential cuplrits
19:29
pameyer
and potential side-effects
19:30
pameyer
wondering if vnu.jar can be used as a library w\ GET requests from ITs
19:34
pdurbin
good question
19:34
pdurbin
ok time for lunch and a walk
20:06
pameyer
pdurbin: I'll assume your last comment on 5400 means there's no point in running the validator against my dataverse crawl results
20:07
pdurbin
correct, sorry for the confusion, low blood sugar
20:07
pdurbin
I don't know what the actual fix will be.
20:08
pdurbin
I was mostly just trying to identify the culprit of the multiple <html> tags.
20:08
pdurbin
I sure am glad I took a look.
20:09
pameyer
me too
20:09
pdurbin
now what was I going to do today?
20:09
pameyer
count things? ;)
20:10
pdurbin
yeah, make data count, I guess
20:10
pdurbin
I mean, the fake PID provider is still in flight.
20:10
pdurbin
No offense to you or Oliver but I think I'm going to try to get a ruling from a few other folks on what the definition of done is for that one.
20:12
pameyer
zero offense taken
20:12
pameyer
and the only reason I requested those changes was that somebody said it was important last time it came up in a wed meeting.
20:12
pameyer
I'm ok with saying "we don't care anymore", not making those changes, and shipping it
20:14
pdurbin
ship it!
20:14
pdurbin
I do remember that conversation but it would have been more work to add it. Trim the tail.
20:15
pdurbin
It'll be interesting to see what makes it in 4.10.
20:19
pdurbin
pameyer: do you think https://github.com/IQSS/dataverse/issues/5401 will be included?
20:20
pdurbin
I was glad to see you create that issue. Seems on topic for 4.10.
20:20
pameyer
pdurbin: hopeful, but not optimistic
20:20
pdurbin
ok
20:20
pdurbin
do you plan to move some of the content out of the dev guide and into installation or admin?
20:24
pameyer
hadn't been thinking about that yet
20:24
pdurbin
ok
20:24
pdurbin
oh, for the fake PID PR, did you run the api tests?
20:25
pameyer
yup
20:25
pdurbin
nice
20:26
pdurbin
so do you want to move it to QA? :)
20:26
pdurbin
ah, you took yourself off it
20:28
pameyer
I'll let somebody else make the call about if we still care about the visual changes
20:28
pdurbin
sounds good
20:28
pameyer
if we don't care; *should* be obvious from my comment that it's ready for qa
20:28
pdurbin
ok
20:29
pdurbin
standup was cancelled today so I guess it'll just sit in code review
20:29
pameyer
or...
20:31

thanks :)
