"This is a very important milestone of the release cycle so we turn to you - NetBeans users - with request for help. Please download this Vote Candidate, edit your Java/HTML /JavaScript/PHP sources, debug the code, try refactoring features, deploy to Tomcat/GlassFish, simply test your typical use cases and once you gain a solid opinion about the VC build please take this short survey.

I'm still on Netbeans 8.2 because I was waiting for proper Java EE and Glassfish support.

Good morning pdurbin :-)

IDEA user here ;-)
11:03
pdurbin
How's the Java EE support?
11:22
poikilotherm
Top
11:23
poikilotherm
But only available in the commercial edition
11:23
poikilotherm
AFAIK there is some program for at least a discount for OSS projects
11:23
poikilotherm
But IIRC only when you don't get paid...
11:30
pdurbin
You use the commercial edition?
11:30
poikilotherm
Aye
11:30
pdurbin
How much does it cost?
11:30
poikilotherm
~500 bucks for the first year, later it gets cheaper AFAIR
11:31
poikilotherm
Yeah 400 2nd year, 300 3rd and beyond
11:32
poikilotherm
That's the price for organizations
11:32
poikilotherm
Individuals receive it much cheaper
11:33
pdurbin
Your employer pays for it?
11:34
poikilotherm
Luckily yes
11:34
poikilotherm
Was a hard fight, but yes
11:37
pdurbin
I don't think I can recommend that fight in our dev guide.
11:38

I just posted this, encouraging Dataverse developers to try out the Java EE support in Netbeans 11 and to take the survey: https://groups.google.com/d/msg/dataverse-dev/q5u6YtywFVw/7itmcYRuBAAJ

@poikilotherm @pdurbin i'm not sure if this is still the case, but at one time intellij offered free one-year licenses to university faculty and students. a former coworker simply renewed every year
12:14
donsizemore
@poikilotherm @pdurbin he was also enrolled in a master's program, which may have made the difference now that i review their requirements

@pdurbin i had started to reply with something about vim but feared retribution =)

Mostly I'm wondering if you and your team are interested in contributng your Polish translation.
14:49
pdurbin
sounds like juancorr called in :)
14:52
MrK
We are still working on translations :p
14:53
pdurbin
MrK: Great! For now, do you want to create an issue over at https://github.com/GlobalDataverseCommunityConsortium/dataverse-language-packs/issues called "Polish translation" or whatever?
15:29
juancorr
pdurbin: Sorry, I have tried attend the meeting, but I cannot be attentive.
15:30
pdurbin
juancorr: no problem! Thanks for calling in!

pdurbin: I will mention it to the team about it.
15:35

Thanks, we only need to know if we can colaborate in the transalation. If so, how we can do it.
15:38
juancorr
We have syncronized the transaltion with the develop branch , two week ago
15:39
juancorr
We can syncrhonize the translation with the v4.11.

juancorr: perfect! Thanks! Do you need anything?
15:52
juancorr
No, nothing, thanks pdurbin
15:54
pdurbin
juancorr: ok, great. Can I explain an idea to you? For the README for that language packs repo?
15:57
juancorr
Certainly. I should go home now (I should search my children too). Tomorrow I will be attentive.

@pdurbin have you played with google's celebration of JSB? https://www.google.com/
17:02
donsizemore
it didn't harmonize a hymn tune very well, but did a great job with the "flintstones" theme
17:15
pdurbin
donsizemore: no but this week I was told by my kid's cello teacher that I can't simply white out the treble clef on piano music and have her play with me.

@pdurbin may i pester with a DV Q?
17:41

hit me

thu-mai wanted a custom metadatablock. she created the TSV, which i uploaded. popped the values into solr. she wants to change the TSV, which i've re-uploaded, and re-enabled, but dataverse doesn't seem to pick up the changes.
17:42
donsizemore
do i need to delete and re-upload, or? (i already want to submit a PR to tidy up a couple things on the metadata customization page)
17:43
pdurbin
please do submit that pr
17:43
pdurbin
some changes are picked up, some are not
17:43
pdurbin
you can add to a controlled vocabulary, for example
17:44
donsizemore
the TSV went in, but then she wanted to change a few things and Dataverse doesn't want to pick up the second version
17:45
pdurbin
Honestly, you're best bet is to drop your database between each iteration.
17:45
pdurbin
I may have written this in the guides.
17:45
donsizemore
(or so she says, but now i'm seeing what i think i should be seeing)
17:45
donsizemore
so, when we want to do this is production, we really need to make this a one-shot
17:46
pdurbin
"you should have a Dataverse environment set up for testing where you can drop the database frequently while you make edits to TSV files" http://guides.dataverse.org/en/4.11/admin/metadatacustomization.html#metadata-block-setup
17:46
donsizemore
eek
17:46
pdurbin
:)
17:46
pdurbin
don't drop your production database
17:49

"my usual practice for playing with metadata blocks is to wipe out everything on the dataverse side when I change the block; otherwise there's possible unexpected behavior" -- pameyer at http://irclog.iq.harvard.edu/dataverse/2018-10-23#i_76874

@donsizemore - in my hands, metadata tsv edits that add or overwrite are picked up, but deletes calse things to behave unpredictably
18:09
pameyer
as far as I know, there's no easier way to delete an existing (even unused) block without needing a bunch of database queries
18:10
pdurbin
thank goodness pameyer is here
18:10
pameyer
when I was fiddling with it, I realized that for my case it was less effort to have a vm just for testing metadata blocks where I could wipe the db
18:10
pameyer
pdurbin: only a for a little bit - will need to drop off again shortly
18:11
donsizemore
in theory she just wants to edit an existing block, but wasn't picking up the changes. i just dropped and re-imported this morning's dbdump (it's a test server)
18:11
donsizemore
don't go far, i have another pesky question
