12:49 andrewSC tyty
12:50 andrewSC had some interesting dns issues on this host i had to work through.. I've got it resolved temporarily but still need to get to the root cause
12:50 andrewSC something to do with my wireguard config lol
13:07 poikilotherm Hi donsizemore andrewSC :-)
13:07 poikilotherm This has become a quiet place... Vacation time?
13:07 donsizemore @poikilotherm I can only dream of a vacation. but yes IQSS is planning vacay post-DCM
13:08 poikilotherm donsizemore same for me :-D
13:08 poikilotherm My vacation is doing construction work. ;-)

13:47 pdurbin Should we make some more NOISE?!?
13:47 * pdurbin plays the cymbals
13:48 Jonas79 hi there :)
13:49 Jonas79 make noise about what?
13:49 pdurbin poikilotherm was complaining it's too quiet in here
13:50 pdurbin Jonas79: I missed the first part of your talk! Looking forward to watching it once the videos are up.

13:50 Jonas79 cool :)
13:51 poikilotherm pdurbin I couldn't hear you till you played my vibration alarm on my cell phone by mentioning :-D
13:51 poikilotherm Your cymbals where to quiet :-D
13:51 poikilotherm were
13:51 poikilotherm Hi Jonas79
13:52 poikilotherm I'm curious for the videos too... I couldn't make it on Friday, will have to watch those...
13:55 Jonas79 I have to revisit my question from last time, which Adam's message yesterday was related to as well. We want to fork dataverse to include some changes in our installation. To do that, we want to use iqss/dataverse/master as the base and fork that to WZBBerlinSocialScienceCenter/dataverse/master-wzbpatch and then make our changes to another branch (maybe 'master-wzbpatch-dev'?) and then include our changes from wzbpatch-dev to wzbpatch.... Is th
13:56 Jonas79 @poikilotherm: hi :)
13:56 poikilotherm Jonas79: your question was cut off :-(
13:57 Jonas79 at what point?
13:57 poikilotherm "Is tha"
13:57 Jonas79 ...to wzbpatch.... Is that the way we can go? We will still try to keep wzbpatch as close to the master at iqss, but some changes to e.g. the bundle config are only relevant for us....
13:58 poikilotherm I'm happy to share and show my exp with our minor fork
13:58 Jonas79 would you maybe have time for a small call with me and Adam?
13:59 poikilotherm Sure
13:59 poikilotherm Now would be a good time :-D
13:59 Jonas79 very nice :) we are on a discord server, but jitsi or whatever would work easily
13:59 poikilotherm I'm around for another 2 hours. Vacation for the rest of the week
14:00 Jonas79 do you use discord?
14:00 donsizemore ^^ construction-cation!
14:00 poikilotherm Whatever works for you
14:01 Jonas79 https://meet.jit.si/wzb-dataverse-branching-talk
14:01 poikilotherm There is a web UI for discord, aye?
14:01 poikilotherm I can offer a VC room, too
15:39 poikilotherm pdurbin donsizemore plz tell me more about working groups...
15:39 poikilotherm (I couldn't make it to any session on Friday due to construction work...)
15:40 pdurbin uh, my impression was that working groups will be under the GDCC
15:40 pdurbin but maybe I heard wrong
15:46 pdurbin Any thoughts on what to do if they shutdown the old crusty CentOS 6 VM that this chat room runs on? (Not the chat room itself but the logging and the chat.dataverse.org web front end.)

16:05 poiki Move on to creating a community Slack/RocketChat/... where IQSS and all community people communicate
16:05 poiki Hooraay for SLOPI, but better non-SLOPI than unconnected.
16:07 pdurbin Well, Slack isn't SLOPI. RocketChat *can* be, such as https://chat.dataverse.org
16:07 pdurbin whoops I meant https://chat.inkscape.org is hosted on RocketChat and is SLOPI
16:13 jri joined #dataverse
16:23 Jonas79 how about mattermost? is that slopi?
16:24 pdurbin I'm not sure if mattermost can be configured to be slopi or not.
16:31 poikilotherm IMHO we should ask: how do we connect IQSS devs, community workgroups and others in one place of communication. If that's non SLOPI for the start, so be it. Projects like K8s deal with that just fine and are much bigger than we are. This place being quiet lets me fear for what happens when pdurbin is not with us for whatever reason.
16:33 pdurbin Well, I'm the one who set up all this IRC stuff for the Dataverse community 7.5 years ago so you should be concerned that it can easily all go away.
16:33 poikilotherm Those community workgroups are a great idea, but I'm not sure tech talk is done very efficiently via mailing lists.
16:33 poikilotherm At least for me being a rather youngster in the dev scene, my communication is shifting heavily from email to chat services and social networks.
16:34 pdurbin Sure, people like to chat.
16:38 poikilotherm To be honest: having a spokesperson at the heart of IQSS is one of the reasons to join this channel and keep going.
16:40 poikilotherm I'm really worried this place got so quiet and I feel a bit disconnect from what happens at IQSS. This isn't your fault pdurbin, not a tiny bit. I think this is just sth happening to all projects evolving and getting bigger.
16:41 poikilotherm Look at those work groups and their size. Alll of this is reminding so much about other, bigger projects like K8s etc with their SIGs
16:41 poikilotherm +me
16:42 poikilotherm Maybe this is just me feeling disconnected.
16:42 poikilotherm Timezones suck.
16:43 poikilotherm But it would be a pitty to have another CeON size fork because of a lack of communication
16:44 poikilotherm Sorry for the rant. This is just giving me some headaches for a while.

17:06 bricas pdurbin: Heya. Do you know of anyone planning on running DV5 on Ubuntu? I'm curious about the Payara 5 setup.
17:21 donsizemore @bricas pallinger just submitted a serious of pull requests to dataverse-ansible, which he's using to install Dataverse on Debian
17:25 poikilotherm Bricas the official payara images for docker are based on Debian
17:26 poikilotherm As I plan to use those for dataverse-kubernetes, this has to be doable :-D
17:30 donsizemore I would think the JDK version would have a much bigger effect than the underlying Linux platform
17:35 poikilotherm Well said donsizemore
17:41 pdurbin I'm so glad Dataverse works decently well on Debian/Ubuntu these days. Some day it would be nice to close https://github.com/IQSS/dataverse/issues/1059
17:43 pdurbin poikilotherm: I've stopped getting up early (for me) and chatting here. So that's one difference you may be feeling. We don't overlap as much. Timezones, like you said. Also, sometimes donsizemore and I chat in IQSS Slack. The three of us are probably the top talkers. We have a Jupyter Notebook we can run if there's any doubt. :)
17:57 poikilotherm Like I said pdurbin, it's not your fault! It was good as long as it lasted, but I don't take this for granted. Your health has to be the top priority no matter what. Thing is, no one else at IQSS seems to care. Obviously this is just my impression. And I won't ask anyone to get up as early as you enjoyed to do. That be ridiculous. But as the overlapping time frame narrows, it seems to me even more important to
17:57 poikilotherm establish more direct connections to each other, so we keep up communicating and pushing things together.
18:00 poikilotherm And with new groups flying in, IMHO it becomes even more important to have a good place to start talking with each other. A place where the community can flourish.
18:00 poikilotherm And again, IMHO this won't happen without a connection to the core, living at IQSS
18:00 poikilotherm People in your place don't seem to like IRC.
18:00 poikilotherm Fine.
18:01 poikilotherm But I can't join you in Slack either.
18:01 poikilotherm Yes, I can send people an email
18:01 poikilotherm But that's just not the same as a near real-time chat
18:01 poikilotherm It feels more formal, like calling the support
18:02 pdurbin Yeah, early on I tried to get people interested in IRC, before Slack even existed. But IQSS is solidly on Slack.
18:03 poikilotherm I don't want to take anything from anybody's hands, but Dataverse is such a great project and people around are so crazy and enjoyable. No idea. Just a feeling and knowledge of other projects dying from less communication.
18:04 pdurbin Sure. I understand you don't want something on the side. You want some core devs in there.
18:06 pdurbin The only reason I bring this up is that they want to shut down the old server that all the chat stuff is on. And if they do I can redirect DNS for chat.dataverse.org to somewhere... but where?
18:07 poikilotherm You asked what would be the next thing to push for a couple of days ago. "but where?"
18:07 poikilotherm Let's push for a more connected communitY
18:08 poikilotherm With those work groups or special interest groups rising I feel this is the next step for Dataverse
18:09 poikilotherm Those are huge groups. Not just two or three people. That's kind of how things started for those big projects
18:11 pdurbin Sure. By the end of the community meeting I was hearing stuff about work groups under the GDCC. I wonder if that's the way to start... ask the GDCC for a devops (or whatever) workgroup. And ask for a chat room.
18:16 pdurbin Oh, the other person who's in IQSS Slack these days is Jim.
18:19 poikilotherm Could I become a member with GDCC to gain access to Harvard's Slack?
18:19 poikilotherm Would people at IQSS move conversations to a GDCC Slack?
18:20 poikilotherm It's a not profit organization so that should make it cheaper...
18:21 pdurbin I think I can just invite you. Should I use your work email?
18:29 bricas thanks for the info folks, perhaps it's time to consider integrating dataverse into our k8s setup.
18:29 pdurbin !
18:29 pdurbin bricas: please keep us posted
18:30 bricas well, it sounds like i'll be following poikilotherm's lead, so you may be ahead of me there :)
18:31 pdurbin I just look at poikilotherm's shiny toys now and then. I haven't picked them up.
18:33 poikilotherm pdurbin go ahead. Work mail is fine.
18:33 poikilotherm And thanks for listening and being so supportive!
18:35 poikilotherm bricas I would be glad for help on K8s stuff... So if you guys have expertise, that would. E wonderful. So many ideas and stuff in my head :-D
18:37 pdurbin poikilotherm: sent (for approval).
18:40 poikilotherm Bricas that got mixed up :-( if you guys would like to share your knowledge and expertise, considering helping me out on this project for a future dataverse in the cloud, I would be glad for anything :-)
18:48 pdurbin poikilotherm: approved
18:49 bricas we have quite a bit of docker+k8s experience, it's just the dataverse+java-related stuff we're not super up on.
18:51 pdurbin Java people say Java is cloud native these days.
18:52 poikilotherm I can help on the Java part :-D
18:52 poikilotherm And on the Dataverse part
18:53 pdurbin thank goodness
