12:46 pdurbin sivoais: "API2LOD ("Happy to LOD") is a tool that facilitates exposing the content of data API onto the Web as Linked Data." --  http://api2lod.appspot.com
13:46 pdurbin shauna: do you know someone named Erin?
13:46 pdurbin from http://mo-www.cfa.harvard.edu/MicroObservatory/ ?
13:59 pdurbin whelp, she just left
14:00 pdurbin shauna: also, I really like this post: pycon 2014 follow up - Google Groups - https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/openscienceframework/kNGi_Yfjl6M
14:00 pdurbin "What other open science themed mailing lists/communication channels are out there"
14:00 pdurbin "How we can allay peoples' fears about open science"
14:00 pdurbin interesting stuff. I forwarded it internally
14:21 sivoais nice, re: API2LOD. Too bad there's not enough docs. It looks like the actual implementations live here <https://github.com/cgueret/LinkedIDS/tree/master/server/IDSWrapper/src/uk/ac/ids/linker/impl>
14:21 pdurbin for now I made a card: https://trello.com/c/NEIgkS3i/10-use-api2lod-http-api2lod-appspot-com-to-expose-data-as-linked-data
14:21 sivoais the linking of a JSON response to RDF is actually not too hard
14:23 sivoais making the names fit into an ontology is a bit more difficult, but is really why you'd go to the effort of converting to the RDF model
14:24 sivoais this is probably not as necessary now that JSON-LD is gaining some ground <http://json-ld.org/>
14:24 sivoais but I have to go to class now :-)
14:25 pdurbin o/
14:51 shauna pdurbin: I do know someone named Erin
14:52 shauna She and I took an 8 hour bus up to Pycon together :)
14:52 shauna Also, perhaps relevant: http://openhatch.mit.edu/
14:53 shauna We are still looking for mentors if any dvn people want to introduce the project to students.  :)
15:00 pdurbin (hint hint)
15:00 pdurbin shauna: she was very nice
15:00 shauna Yeah, she's great.  Was she at dvn hq?
15:00 pdurbin hell yeah
15:01 shauna Also, re that OSF thread - I hope people reply.  That was the medium we agreed to use for further discussion but I don't see any new joins.  It would have been easier to agree on a Numfocus list because I would have joined that & could have made the OSF people join too.
15:03 pdurbin shauna: I think skay has a #hackingscience channel. I offered to log it along side this one.
15:05 shauna I joined it.  Lonely place!
15:05 pdurbin T-T
15:06 shauna Also skay and I already hang out by ourselves in #openscienceframework
15:06 pdurbin oh
15:06 shauna But maybe that's a place for discussion
15:06 shauna I think Mozilla Science Labs is thinking of starting up an IRC channel
15:07 pdurbin oh yeah. that thing
15:07 pdurbin searchbot: lucky mozilla science labs
15:07 searchbot pdurbin: https://wiki.mozilla.org/ScienceLab
15:07 pdurbin Mozilla Science Lab | Helping to make the web work for science. - http://mozillascience.org
15:09 shauna They're the umbrella org for Software Carpentry
15:11 18VAAHWM6 joined #dvn
15:16 pdurbin ah
16:24 pdurbin hmm. Data Catalog Vocabulary (DCAT) - http://www.w3.org/TR/vocab-dcat/
16:25 pdurbin "DCAT is an RDF vocabulary designed to facilitate interoperability between data catalogs published on the Web"
16:51 skay shauna: no new sign ups?
16:53 shauna skay: not that I can see
16:53 * shauna sighs
16:54 skay I was hoping for better. I thinking asking people to join the numfocus list was a good idea
16:59 skay more broad
17:06 pdurbin big tent
17:08 shauna I mean, we can go ahead and do that and hope that the people we spoke to at PyCon are on it.
17:08 shauna It's not clear to me that numfocus is a significantly bigger tent.
17:11 skay perhaps not
17:12 skay pdurbin: we met joeyh's friend who does neurodebian
17:12 skay in person, he was there
17:12 skay I was very excited, and I had hoped maybe to find people to talk about interoperability with data packages, versioning, etc.
17:13 skay we didn't talk much on that though. people were more in to policy and cultural changes required
17:18 pdurbin searchbot: lucky neurodebian
17:18 searchbot pdurbin: http://neuro.debian.net/
17:19 * pdurbin looks at http://neuro.debian.net/about.html#the-team
17:19 skay not much talk on infrastructure happens on the osf list.
17:29 skay pdurbin: Yaroslav, remember?
17:29 skay he joined #dvn for a bit to chat
17:29 skay the other day
17:29 skay and we emailed a little bit about git-annex
17:31 skay out to lunch now
17:38 * pdurbin does remember
20:24 yoh joined #dvn
20:36 pdurbin hmm. [DDI-users] Update on DDI Moving Forward - http://lists.icpsr.umich.edu/pipermail/ddi-users/2014-April/000830.html
20:37 pdurbin yoh: oh hey
20:37 pdurbin welcome back :)
20:37 pdurbin gotta run. new nephew to meet this weekend! https://twitter.com/dicebourbon/status/419597557199671296
20:55 JonathanNeal congrats pdurbin !
21:21 pdurbin JonathanNeal: thanks :)
21:46 skay hi yoh
22:25 pdurbin yoh: nice list. Open Science Channels - https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Icgoka0ePqQQKmulLsVLx2S-dSVqPO97Sd2evvM59ko/edit?usp=sharing
22:33 yoh skay: Hi skay ;)
22:33 yoh pdurbin: could be a useful start... we will see ;)
22:35 pdurbin seems a little neuroscience heavy
22:35 pdurbin but whatever :)
22:35 yoh pdurbin: ;-) because that is what I know -- please contribute the ones from your field -- that was the point ;)
22:36 pdurbin sure. I understand
22:36 pdurbin I feel the need to revisit the definition of "open science"
22:37 pdurbin there was a thread about this
22:37 yoh ah -- there is a difinition? ;)
22:37 pdurbin yep. one sec
22:44 pdurbin open science is "providing sufficiently complete methods and observations" according to http://centerforopenscience.org/about/ . The commit: https://github.com/CenterForOpenScience/centerforopenscience.org/commit/372505a60df2a64ae60b8c6d159b513e4f44b89c#diff-365e1177e12662fc5599bb808c94faa1R8
22:45 pdurbin and they should know :)
22:48 pdurbin via https://groups.google.com/d/msg/openscienceframework/Wn4zslAhslc/8zcQJ9tpF34J
23:00 yoh I see lots of answers to "Why" and may be "how", but "providing sufficiently complete methods and observations" in itself is not sufficient ;)  that was a not-very-enforced requirement for many scientific endeavors before as well
23:00 pdurbin :)
23:01 pdurbin anyway, it's tricky to define. good on them for trying
23:02 yoh concur! ;-)
23:04 pdurbin I'd probably just call it "real science"
23:08 pdurbin yoh: we are looking for feedback on domain-specific metadata. domains such as neuroscience: Metadata for Dataverse 4.0 and Beyond - Google Groups - https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/dataverse-community/fBjW8VBHAPE
23:22 yoh uff... elephant in the room ;-)  even within neuroscience it is non-trivial since there is many subfields (electrophys, neuroimaging with its own multitude of modalities etc).  http://www.neuinfo.org/ is probably the tip of the iceberg trying to pull such information from various sources into a "single" structure
23:23 yoh then within neuroimaging we have e.g. ni-dash of INCF group (yours truly a part of somewhat) distilling meta-data to describe provenance of neuroimaging studies.  This one could be the tip of that iceberg: http://datasharing.incf.org/ni/Extensible_Neuroimaging_Vocabulary_for_Data_Sharing
23:24 yoh let me actually share that post within the group -- more meta-data-inspired people might be able to contribute
23:26 pdurbin great. thanks
23:26 pdurbin yoh: what group?
23:28 yoh all those INCF-affilliatied groups I had in mind (where the post would go through ;) )
23:28 pdurbin ah. ok
